Great for Children of about 6 to 9 who are curious about what grown-ups do at work

Think twice if You want a strategy game: this is a gentle question-and-answer game

How we rate it

Learning curve. Skillmatics says it takes 2 minutes to learn: ask yes-or-no questions, win 7 cards. It sits at 1 on our scale with UNO; the skill is in asking good questions, which is a little harder with jobs than with animals.

Luck & skill. Which job you draw is luck, and a nurse is easier to pin down than an archaeologist. Asking questions that cut the options quickly, and saving clue cards for hard jobs, decide most games.

Interaction. Two sides take turns asking and answering, and the card-holder has to answer fairly. There is no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards into the case and give three clue cards to each player or team.

Reading. Guessers only talk. The card-holder reads English buzzwords, clues and the bonus question aloud, so a child who can't read yet should hold cards with a partner.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Guess in 10: Inspiring Professions right for you?

Great if

  • Children of about 6 to 9 who are curious about what grown-ups do at work
  • Backing up school lessons on community helpers and the jobs people do
  • Pairing a young guesser with an older cousin or grandparent who reads the cards
  • Car journeys and waiting rooms: it is one small box of cards

Skip it if

  • You want a strategy game: this is a gentle question-and-answer game
  • Nobody at the table can read the English clues aloud for the youngest players
  • You play every day with the same children: 50 jobs start to repeat once the clues are remembered

How Guess in 10: Inspiring Professions plays

Set-up: shuffle the 50 profession cards into the card case and give each player or team three clue cards. Skillmatics' rules split everyone into two teams when more than two people play, and the youngest player or team guesses first.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Everything on the cards is in English: the job's name, its three buzzwords, three clues, a fact and a bonus question, all read aloud by whoever holds the card. The guessers only talk, so the questions and answers can be in Hindi, Marathi or any mix your family speaks. We found no Hindi or regional-language edition.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Hint

The other side draws a profession card, keeps it hidden and reads out two of its three buzzwords.

  2. 2
    Ask

Ask up to 10 yes-or-no questions and make up to two guesses. A clue card buys one of the card's three numbered clues.

  3. 3
    Bonus

After a right guess you may answer the bonus question: a right answer gives you all three buzzwords next time, a wrong one loses the card.

  4. 4
    Win

The first player or team to win 7 cards wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10: Inspiring Professions goes

A turn: someone on the other side draws a card, keeps it hidden and reads out the first two of its three buzzwords, for example 'Helpful' and 'Uniform' on the Nurse card. You then get up to 10 questions that can be answered yes or no, such as 'Do people in this job work at a hospital?' or 'Do they use tools to fix things?'. If the card-holder doesn't know an answer, that question doesn't count. You have two guesses per card; two wrong guesses and the card is set aside.

Clues and bonus questions: each card also has three numbered clues ('I often use a stethoscope and thermometer when I'm at work'). Play one of your clue cards, pick a number from 1 to 3 and that clue is read to you; each side has only three for the whole game. After a right guess you may try the card's bonus question, and in this deck many are small maths, spelling or science puzzles, such as spelling 'journalist' in one go. A right answer means you hear all three buzzwords on your next card; a wrong one loses you the card you just won.

How you win, and what's different: the first player or team to win 7 cards wins. The rules are the same as for the Animal Kingdom deck on our Guess in 10 page; what changes is how you narrow things down. Animals split neatly by legs, wings or water, while jobs split by what people wear, where they work and what they use, so a six-year-old may need a grown-up's help to think of good questions at first.

Tip: before the first game, read a few cards aloud together, so younger children have heard the less familiar jobs, such as archaeologist and florist, before they have to guess them.

About the editions

Inspiring Professions is Skillmatics' own deck, made by its Mumbai company Grasper Global. Skillmatics' India product page gives India as the country of origin, and Skillmatics' photo of the box back reads 'Made in India'. Skillmatics sells the same deck abroad under the same item code and barcode, so there is no separate import to look for. Our Amazon.in link goes to Skillmatics' item SKILL54GIP.

Before you choose

  • The box should say Skillmatics, Guess in 10 and Inspiring Professions, with an age band of 6-99 and 2-6 players.
  • Inside: 50 profession cards and 6 clue cards. Each profession card has three buzzwords, three numbered clues, a fact and a bonus question.
  • Skillmatics' barcode for this deck is 8904279500464 and its item code is SKILL54GIP.
  • The box back names Grasper Global Private Limited, Mumbai, as manufacturer and marketer.
  • The listing may call the deck just 'Professions': check that it names Skillmatics as the maker.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, forum threads or videos about the Inspiring Professions deck itself. What Skillmatics shows of the cards suggests a gentle learning game: everyday helpers such as nurses, plumbers and firefighters sit alongside less familiar jobs like archaeologist, florist and journalist, and the bonus questions slip in a little maths and spelling. The rules are Skillmatics' usual Guess in 10 rules, so the main question is whether your child is more excited by jobs than by animals. Expect a grown-up reader to be needed for players around six.

What people love

  • A mix of everyday jobs children see around them and new ones to learn about
  • Clues describe what people do and the tools they use, which builds vocabulary as well as guessing skills
  • Bonus questions add quick maths, spelling and science puzzles
  • The same two-minute rules as other Guess in 10 decks, so families can switch between packs easily

Common complaints

  • The card-holder has to read English clues and bonus questions aloud
  • Some bonus questions, such as the multi-step sums, may be hard for six-year-olds
  • With 50 cards, children who play often will soon remember the answers

Questions people ask about Guess in 10: Inspiring Professions

What age is Guess in 10 Inspiring Professions for?

Which jobs are in Guess in 10 Inspiring Professions?

There are 50 profession cards. Skillmatics' pictures show a nurse, a plumber, a firefighter, a florist, an astronaut, an archaeologist and a journalist among them, so familiar helpers sit next to jobs children may not have heard of.

How is it different from the Guess in 10 animal game?

The rules, the box and the card counts are the same as the Animal Kingdom deck on our Guess in 10 page. Only the topic changes: good questions are about what people wear, where they work and what they use, which suits children who love role-play or are learning about community helpers.

Is Guess in 10 Inspiring Professions made in India?

Yes. Skillmatics' India product page gives India as the country of origin and names Grasper Global Private Limited, Mumbai, as manufacturer, and Skillmatics' own photo of the box back reads 'Made in India'.

The cards are printed only in English, but the yes-or-no questions and answers can be in Hindi or any language your family speaks. Whoever holds the card just needs to read the English clues.
