The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Children of 3 to 6 who know Cinderella, Ariel, Moana and the other princess films

Think twice if Your child doesn't know the princess films yet: clues like 'Jaq and Gus' or 'a glass slipper' only help if they do

How we rate it

Learning curve. Pick a tile, hear the answer, guess the princess; Skillmatics says 2 minutes to learn. The easiest end of our scale, made for preschoolers.

Luck & skill. Which card turns up and which tile gives the best clue is largely luck; knowing the films is what helps most. Older children learn which tiles narrow things down fastest.

Interaction. Players take turns asking and answering about the hidden card; there is no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Spread the 10 guider tiles face up and stack the cards. Nothing else to set up.

Reading. Skillmatics says no reading is required: the tiles carry pictures. Whoever holds the card answers aloud, so a grown-up or older child in that role helps with the youngest players.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Guess in 10 Junior: Disney Princess right for you?

Great if

  • Children of 3 to 6 who know Cinderella, Ariel, Moana and the other princess films
  • A parent or grandparent playing with one or two little ones
  • Practising asking and answering questions in a short, calm game
  • A birthday gift for a young princess fan, in a box that fits in a travel bag

Skip it if

  • Your child doesn't know the princess films yet: clues like 'Jaq and Gus' or 'a glass slipper' only help if they do
  • Your child is 6 or older and reads well: the standard Disney deck, with 52 characters and free yes-or-no questions, will last longer
  • Your child isn't drawn to princesses: Skillmatics' other Junior decks cover animals, food and everyday places

How Guess in 10 Junior: Disney Princess plays

Guess in 10 Junior is Skillmatics' guessing game made simpler for ages 3 to 6. Instead of making up yes-or-no questions, children choose from 10 guider tiles, each a ready-made question with a picture, such as 'Who is their best friend?', 'What do they love to do?', 'What do they wear?' or 'Name an object connected to this character'.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Skillmatics says no reading is needed: each guider tile carries its question with a picture, so a child can choose one without reading. The tiles and cards are in English, and whoever holds the card answers aloud, which works just as well in Hindi or any home language. We found no Hindi or regional-language edition.

One player takes a princess card and keeps it hidden from the others.

The guesser picks a picture tile, such as 'Who is their best friend?', and the card-holder answers it: 'Jaq and Gus!'

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10 Junior: Disney Princess goes

One player takes one of the 35 game cards and keeps it hidden. The other player, or team, picks a tile and asks its question, and the card-holder answers it about the character on the card. In Skillmatics' how-to-play picture, 'Who is their best friend?' gets the answer 'Jaq and Gus', 'Name an object connected to this character' gets 'a glass slipper', and the guesser calls out Cinderella.

Keep choosing tiles until you are ready to guess; Skillmatics says you can ask up to 10 questions. Name the character and you keep the card; get it wrong and the card is discarded. The first player to collect 7 cards wins.

How it differs from the standard Guess in 10: the questions come from the tiles, so a child who can't read yet can still take part; there are no clue cards; and the deck has 35 cards rather than 52. Whoever holds the card has to answer about that character, so with 3- and 4-year-olds it works best if a grown-up or an older child takes that role.

The cards come from the Disney Princess films. Skillmatics' pictures show Cinderella, Snow White, Ariel, Belle, Mulan, Moana and Jasmine, and Prince Charming, Aladdin and Ursula, the sea witch from The Little Mermaid, are among the sample cards too, so not every card is a princess. Skillmatics doesn't publish the full list of 35.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews of the Disney Princess deck. Like Skillmatics' other Junior decks, it swaps free yes-or-no questions for picture tiles so that children of 3 to 6 can join in, and Skillmatics says no reading is needed. Expect to hold the cards and answer for the youngest players yourself, and the game works best for children who already know the princess films. For a child who loves Cinderella or Moana, it is a gentle way to practise asking and answering questions.

What people love

  • Ready-made picture questions, so children who can't read yet can take part
  • Short rounds that suit a preschooler's attention span
  • Characters young children already know, from Cinderella to Moana
  • A small box that is easy to carry on trips

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews, so it is hard to say how well 35 cards hold up to repeat play
  • Only fun for children who know the princess films
  • With the youngest players, a grown-up has to hold the cards and answer
