The quick verdict
Full verdict ↓Great for Pre-schoolers who are curious about what is on their plate
Think twice if Your child is 8 or older and loves food: Foods Around the World has 50 dishes from other countries, with clues and bonus questions
How we rate it
Learning curve. Choose a tile, ask its question, name the food, and the first to 7 cards wins; Skillmatics says the rules take about 5 minutes to learn. That is a 1 on our scale, alongside UNO and Connect 4.
Luck & skill. The card you draw is luck. Asking the sweet-or-salty or colour question at the right moment, so that it rules out the most foods, is the small skill older children develop.
Interaction. Players take turns asking and answering about one hidden food; nobody blocks or takes from anyone.
Set-up. Shuffle the 35 food cards and keep the 10 guider tiles within the guesser's reach.
Reading. Skillmatics says the game is designed so that players need not read: foods and questions are pictures. A grown-up reads the English manual.
Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.
Is Guess in 10 Junior: Food We Eat! right for you?
Great if
- Pre-schoolers who are curious about what is on their plate
- Talking about healthy and less healthy food without a lecture
- Learning colour and taste words such as sweet and salty, in English or a home language
- Waiting at a restaurant or on a train, since it is one small box
Skip it if
- Your child is 8 or older and loves food: Foods Around the World has 50 dishes from other countries, with clues and bonus questions
- You are hoping for Indian dishes: the sample cards show fruit, peas, juice and a pizza, and Skillmatics doesn't publish the full list, so we can't say whether roti, dal or idli are among them
- You want a game the adults will enjoy on their own: the deck is pitched at 3 to 6-year-olds
How Guess in 10 Junior: Food We Eat! plays
There are 35 food cards and 10 guider tiles in the box. Skillmatics doesn't list them all, but its pictures show an apple, peas, a strawberry, an avocado, a banana and a pizza; its sample questions ask whether a food is sweet or salty, whether it is healthy and what colour it is, which shows the kind of thinking the deck is built around. The card-holder takes a card and keeps it out of sight.
- Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
- Reading and language: No reading during play: the foods and guider tiles are pictures. The manual is in English, and families can ask and answer in Hindi, Bengali, Kannada or any language they use at the dinner table.

A turn, step by step
- 1Draw
The card-holder takes a food card and holds it so the guesser can't see it.
- 2Ask
The guesser picks up a guider tile and asks its question, such as 'Is it sweet or salty?'. Up to 10 tiles per card.
- 3Win
Name the food to keep the card; a wrong guess discards it. Whoever collects 7 cards first wins.
The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10 Junior: Food We Eat! goes
The guesser takes one guider tile at a time and asks the question it pictures; the card-holder answers by looking at the food. Each card allows at most 10 tiles. Guess it and the card is yours; guess wrong and it goes on the discard pile. Whoever collects 7 cards first wins.
How Junior differs from the regular game: regular Guess in 10 decks allow only yes-or-no questions, give the card-holder English buzz words and clues to read out, and add clue cards, bonus questions and a second guess. Junior keeps the core idea, asking clever questions to find the hidden card, and hands the questions to the picture tiles, so nobody has to read.
Compared with Foods Around the World: our page for that deck covers Skillmatics' 8+ food pack, with 50 famous dishes such as sushi, tacos and baklava and reading on every card. Food We Eat! is for much younger children and, going by its sample questions, stays with simple ideas: taste, colour and healthy eating.
Play it close to a meal. After a round, pick up a tile and ask the same question about the food on the table: is the dal salty, what colour is the papaya? Children soon start inventing questions of their own.

What reviewers and players say
We couldn't find any independent written reviews or forum threads about the Food We Eat! deck. Skillmatics' sample questions point to a gentle game about describing food by its taste, its colour and whether it is healthy, and a US public library keeps it on its youth games shelf. Skillmatics doesn't say which 35 foods are in it, which matters if you are hoping for dishes from your own kitchen.
What people love
- No reading: every question comes from a picture tile
- Sweet-or-salty and healthy-or-not questions make food habits easy to talk about
- Colour and taste words for children who are just learning them
- Quick turns and a small box for restaurants and train journeys
Common complaints
- No independent reviews yet, so it is unclear how well it holds a child's interest
- Skillmatics doesn't publish the food list, so you can't check for familiar Indian foods
- Listings disagree on whether a card holder comes in the box
