The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Sport-mad children from about 6 who follow matches or play at school

Think twice if Your children mainly follow cricket: several cards we could see are sports rarely watched in India, such as baseball, American football and ice hockey

How we rate it

Learning curve. Ask yes-or-no questions, name the sport, win 7 cards; Skillmatics says it takes 2 minutes to learn. That puts it at 1 on our scale with UNO; knowing your sports matters more than the rules.

Luck & skill. Which card you draw is luck, and basketball is easier than kickboxing. Questions that split the field (team or single player, ball or no ball, Olympic or not) and knowing a range of sports decide most games.

Interaction. Two sides take turns asking and answering, and the other side must answer truthfully; there is no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and hand out three clue cards to each player or team. There is nothing else to set up.

Reading. Guessers only talk, but the card-holder reads English buzz words, clues and the bonus question aloud, so a child who can't read yet needs a partner.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

  • Families who like trivia and enjoy a friendly argument about sport
  • Car journeys, train trips and waiting rooms, since it is one small box of cards
  • Mixed ages at family get-togethers, playing in two teams

Skip it if

  • Your children mainly follow cricket: several cards we could see are sports rarely watched in India, such as baseball, American football and ice hockey
  • Nobody at the table can read the English cards aloud
  • You play very often with the same group; with 50 cards, the answers start to repeat

How Guess in 10: World of Sports plays

Shuffle the 50 sports cards and give each player, or each of two teams if more are playing, three clue cards for the whole game. The youngest side starts, and the first to win 7 cards wins.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The cards are printed in English, and whoever holds the card reads out the buzz words, clues and bonus question. The questions and answers can be in Hindi or any language the family shares. We found no Hindi or regional-language edition.

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10: World of Sports goes

Each card is one sport, from baseball, basketball and tennis to karate, kickboxing and gymnastics. Next to the picture are three buzz words (for karate: strength, barefoot, defence), three clues, a facts panel that says whether the sport is played alone or in teams, whether it is in the Olympics and what equipment it needs, and a bonus question. The card-holder starts you off with the first two buzz words.

Then ask up to 10 yes-or-no questions. Skillmatics' rules sheet suggests ones like 'Is it an Olympic sport?', 'Is it played with a racket?', 'Is it played barefoot?', 'Is it played on ice?' and 'Is it the national sport of a country?'. A question the card-holder can't answer doesn't count, you get two guesses per card, and a clue card lets you hear clue 1, 2 or 3.

Guess right and you keep the card, then decide whether to try the bonus question: count the vowels in SKATEBOARDING in 10 seconds, pick the odd one out from judo, karate, kickboxing, wrestling and kung fu, or name three non-Olympic sports (kabaddi is one of Skillmatics' answers). A right answer earns all three buzz words on your next turn; a wrong one costs you the card.

The rules and the 6+ age are the same as in the Animal Kingdom deck on our Guess in 10 page; only the subject changes. Children who play or watch sport have an edge, and cards like baseball and American football are a chance to learn sports that are less familiar in India.

About the editions

World of Sports is made by Skillmatics' Mumbai company, Grasper Global, and Skillmatics' own photo of the box back reads 'Made in India'. Skillmatics sells the same deck abroad with the same item code and barcode, so there is no imported version to look for. Our Amazon.in link goes to Skillmatics' listing for this deck, item SKILL36GWS.

Before you choose

  • The box front should say Skillmatics, Guess in 10 and World of Sports, with an age band of 6-99.
  • Inside you should find 50 game cards and 6 clue cards, plus an instruction leaflet.
  • Skillmatics' barcode for this deck is 8904279500334 and its item code is SKILL36GWS.
  • The box back should name Grasper Global Private Limited, Mumbai, as the maker and say Made in India.
  • A listing titled simply 'Guess in 10 Sports' is this deck if it names Skillmatics and shows the World of Sports box.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews of the World of Sports deck. Guess in 10 is Skillmatics' best-known game: its Animal Planet deck won a NAPPA parenting award in 2022, with parent testers praising how well it travels and how children and adults enjoy it together. World of Sports keeps those rules and the same 6+ age, swapping animals for sports from baseball to kickboxing. It should suit sporty children and families who like trivia, though children who mainly follow cricket may find some cards unfamiliar.

What people love

  • The same quick rules as the animal deck, at the same 6+ age
  • A facts panel on every card: alone or in teams, Olympic or not, and the gear it needs
  • Bonus questions mix sport with word and number puzzles, like counting the vowels in SKATEBOARDING
  • A small box that travels well

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews, so it is hard to say how well 50 cards last with repeat play
  • Several sample cards (baseball, American football, ice hockey) are sports many Indian children rarely see
  • The card-holder has to read English clues aloud
