Great for Children of 8 and up who enjoy cooking shows or trying new food

Think twice if Your family would rather not have meat dishes as answers: sample cards include steak, a beef hamburger and sushi

How we rate it

Learning curve. Ask yes-or-no questions, name the dish, win 7 cards; Skillmatics says it takes 2 minutes to learn. That puts it at 1 on our scale with UNO; knowing dishes from other countries is the hard part.

Luck & skill. Which card you draw is luck, and a hamburger is easier than cheese fondue. Questions that split the options (sweet or savoury, hot or cold, Asian or not) and knowing a range of foods decide most games.

Interaction. Two sides take turns asking and answering, and the other side must answer truthfully; there is no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and hand out three clue cards to each player or team. There is nothing else to set up.

Reading. Guessers only talk, but the card-holder reads English buzz words, clues, dish names and a bonus question aloud, so children under about 8 need a reading partner.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Guess in 10: Foods Around the World right for you?

Great if

  • Children of 8 and up who enjoy cooking shows or trying new food
  • Families who travel or eat out and like talking about dishes from other countries
  • A dinner-table or road-trip game for two teams
  • A small gift for a food-loving child

Skip it if

  • Your family would rather not have meat dishes as answers: sample cards include steak, a beef hamburger and sushi
  • You want Indian food on the cards: the dishes we could see are from other countries, and Skillmatics doesn't publish the full list
  • Your players are under 8 or can't yet read English, unless a grown-up reads the cards

How Guess in 10: Foods Around the World plays

Shuffle the 50 dish cards and give each player, or each of two teams if more are playing, three clue cards for the whole game. The youngest side starts, and the first to win 7 cards wins.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Every card is printed in English, and whoever holds the card reads out the buzz words, clues and bonus question, including dish names from many countries. The questions and answers can be in Hindi or any language the family shares. We found no Hindi or regional-language edition.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Hint

The card-holder reads out the first two buzz words, such as 'Thailand' and 'Savoury', keeping the dish hidden.

  2. 2
    Ask

Ask up to 10 yes-or-no questions, like 'Is it usually served hot?'. You get two guesses per card and three clue cards for the whole game.

  3. 3
    Win

Name the dish to keep the card; a right bonus answer earns all three buzz words next turn. The first to win 7 cards wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10: Foods Around the World goes

Each card is one dish, such as sushi, tacos, Thai curry, cheese fondue, baklava or a hamburger. With the picture come three buzz words (for Thai curry: Thailand, savoury, coconut), three clues ('People use very long forks to eat me'), a facts panel saying whether the dish is served hot or cold, savoury or sweet, and what goes into it, and a bonus question. The card-holder starts you off with the first two buzz words.

Then ask up to 10 yes-or-no questions. Skillmatics suggests 'Is it usually served hot?', 'Is it sweet?' and 'Did it come from Asia?', and the box adds 'Is it usually eaten with chopsticks?'. A question the card-holder can't answer doesn't count, you get two guesses per card, and a clue card lets you pick clue 1, 2 or 3.

Guess right and you keep the card, then choose whether to try the bonus question. In this deck the bonus is often about words or geography rather than food: say six words that rhyme with THAI in 10 seconds, name three countries that start with M, or give the colours of Mexico's flag. Get it right to hear all three buzz words on your next turn; get it wrong and you lose the card.

The rules match the Animal Kingdom deck on our Guess in 10 page, but this deck is rated 8+ and leans on what children pick up from travel, eating out and cooking shows rather than school. A child who has tried sushi or tacos will have a head start; everyone else learns a few new dishes along the way.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews of the Foods Around the World deck. Guess in 10 is Skillmatics' best-known game: its Animal Planet deck won a NAPPA parenting award in 2022, with parent testers praising how well it travels and how children and adults enjoy it together. This deck keeps those rules and turns them to famous dishes, from sushi and tacos to baklava. It should suit food-curious children of 8 and up; families who don't eat meat should know that some answers are meat dishes.

What people love

  • Dishes from many countries, from Japanese sushi to Mexican tacos
  • A facts panel on every card: hot or cold, sweet or savoury, and what goes into it
  • Bonus questions turn to words and geography, like rhymes for THAI or countries that start with M
  • Takes about two minutes to learn, and the small box travels well

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews, so it is hard to say how well 50 cards last with repeat play
  • Some sample answers are meat or fish dishes (steak, a beef hamburger, sushi)
  • The card-holder has to read English clues and dish names aloud

Questions people ask about Guess in 10: Foods Around the World

Which dishes are in Guess in 10 Foods Around the World?

Skillmatics' sample cards show sushi, tacos, Thai curry, cheese fondue, baklava, steak and a hamburger. Skillmatics doesn't publish the full list of 50 dishes, so we can't say whether any Indian dishes are included.

Is Guess in 10 Foods Around the World suitable for a vegetarian family?

The cards are only pictures and words, but some answers are meat or fish dishes: the sample cards include steak, a hamburger whose ingredients list ground beef, and sushi. Families who would rather avoid these may prefer another Guess in 10 deck, such as Countries of the World.

What age is Guess in 10 Foods Around the World for?

Skillmatics says 8 and up, and the box says 8-99. The card-holder reads English clues aloud, so younger children can join a team with an older reader.

Is Guess in 10 Foods Around the World made in India?

Yes. Skillmatics' own photo of the box back reads 'Made in India' with the Mumbai address of Grasper Global, Skillmatics' company, and its India product page gives India as the country of origin.

How is Foods Around the World different from the animal Guess in 10?

The rules and the box of 50 game cards and 6 clue cards are the same. Foods Around the World is rated 8+ instead of 6+, you guess famous dishes rather than animals, and its bonus questions often test words and geography.
