Great for Children from about 6 who know their Disney films, old and new

Think twice if Your children haven't seen many Disney films: cards like Maui or Peter Pan are hard to guess without them

How we rate it

Learning curve. Ask yes-or-no questions, name the character, win 7 cards; Skillmatics says it takes 2 minutes to learn. That is a 1 on our scale, level with UNO; knowing the films matters far more than the rules.

Luck & skill. Which card turns up is luck, and Mickey Mouse is easier than Maui. Questions that split the field (animal or human, princess or not, can it fly) and knowing many films decide most games.

Interaction. The two sides take turns asking and answering, and answers must be truthful; there is no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and give each player or team three clue cards. That is all.

Reading. Guessers only talk, but the card-holder reads English buzz-words, clues and the bonus question aloud, so a child who can't read yet needs a partner.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Guess in 10: Disney right for you?

Great if

  • Children from about 6 who know their Disney films, old and new
  • Brothers, sisters and cousins of different ages, playing in two teams
  • Train journeys, flights and waiting rooms, since it is one small box of cards
  • A birthday or return gift for a young Disney fan

Skip it if

  • Your children haven't seen many Disney films: cards like Maui or Peter Pan are hard to guess without them
  • Nobody at the table can read the English cards aloud
  • You already own Skillmatics' 2024 Disney box: the rules are the same, and Skillmatics doesn't say how many characters the two share

How Guess in 10: Disney plays

Shuffle the 52 character cards. With more than two players, split into two teams; each side gets three clue cards that have to last the whole game. The first side to win 7 character cards wins.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The cards are printed in English, and whoever holds the card reads out its buzz-words, clues and bonus question. The guessing itself can happen in Hindi or any language the family shares. We found no Hindi or regional-language Disney deck.

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10: Disney goes

Every card is one Disney character. Beside the picture are three buzz-words, three clues written as if the character were talking, a facts panel (which film or group they come from, what they wear, what they are like and who their friends are) and a bonus question. Donald Duck's card, for example, has the buzz-words determined, loyal and tantrums, and its bonus asks for the name of his rich uncle.

The card-holder starts you off with two of the buzz-words. Then you have up to 10 yes-or-no questions; Skillmatics' own examples are 'Is the character an animal?', 'Can this character fly?' and 'Does this character wear a blue gown?'. When you are stuck, spend a clue card to hear one of the three clues. Under the series rules you get two guesses per card.

Name the character and the card is yours. You may then try its bonus question: sing a line of Elsa's 'Let It Go', name another Disney character's pet, or name five characters from Peter Pan in 10 seconds. A right answer earns all three buzz-words on your next turn; a wrong one loses you the card.

The rules are the same as in every regular Guess in 10 deck, including the animal deck on our Guess in 10 page; only the subject is new. Children who have watched a lot of Disney have a clear edge, so mixing a parent and a child on each team keeps things fair.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews of the Disney deck. Guess in 10 is Skillmatics' best-known game, and its animal deck won a NAPPA parenting award in 2022, with parent testers calling it fun for children and adults alike and easy to take on trips. The Disney deck keeps those rules for ages 6 and up and fills its 52 cards with characters from Mickey Mouse to Maui, each with a bonus question about the films. It should go down well with children who have watched plenty of Disney; those who have seen few of the films may find some cards hard.

What people love

  • Characters most children already know from films and TV
  • Bonus questions that ask you to sing a line or name characters against the clock
  • The same quick rules as every Guess in 10 deck, learnt in a couple of minutes
  • One small box that travels well

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews of this deck, so it is hard to say how the cards hold up
  • Children who haven't seen the older films may struggle with cards like Peter Pan
  • The card-holder has to read English clues aloud
