The quick verdict

Great for Children from 4 who can name toys and everyday things but can't read yet

Think twice if Your children are 6 or older and already play classic Dobble: the Kids deck plays the same way, only the pictures change

How we rate it

Learning curve. One idea to learn: find the only picture two cards share. It sits with UNO and Connect 4 at 1 on our scale; the challenge is speed, not rules.

Luck & skill. The shuffle decides which cards come up, but quick eyes and quick reactions decide who wins. There is no planning, so the 4 means 'mostly skill' in the sense of sharp spotting, not strategy.

Interaction. Everyone races for the same card at the same time, and in The Hot Potato and The Poisoned Gift you push cards onto other players.

Set-up. Shuffle and deal as the mini-game says: one card face down each and a face-up pile for The Tower and The Poisoned Gift, the whole deck shared out for The Well, nine cards face up for The Triplet.

Reading. Only pictures on the cards; an adult reads the rules leaflet once.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Dobble Kids right for you?

Great if

  • Children from 4 who can name toys and everyday things but can't read yet
  • Family get-togethers where grandparents, parents and little cousins all play at once, up to 8
  • Train journeys, waiting rooms and holidays: a small tin and games that last a few minutes
  • Parents who want to start with Dobble for little ones before moving on to the classic deck

Skip it if

  • Your children are 6 or older and already play classic Dobble: the Kids deck plays the same way, only the pictures change
  • You want a quiet game: everyone looks and shouts at the same time
  • You want turns and time to think; Dobble is all about speed

How Dobble Kids plays

The deck: 55 round cards, each with 8 pictures of things from a child's day, such as a teddy bear, a toy train, a bath duck, a yo-yo, a crayon and a school bag. Any two cards share exactly one picture, never more and never less. It is the same shape and colour on both cards; only the size can differ.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The cards have only pictures: toys and everyday things from a child's world. You call out the matching picture in any language, so 'gubbara' and 'balloon' are both right, and children who can't read yet play on equal terms. Only the rules leaflet needs reading, once, by an adult.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Flip

Everyone turns their card face up at the same moment. There are no turns, so the race starts at once.

  2. 2
    Spot

Find the one picture your card shares with the centre card, or with another player's, and say its name first.

  3. 3
    Move

Take, place or hand over the card as your mini-game says, then look straight away at the next pair.

  4. 4
    Win

The most cards wins The Tower and The Triplet; emptying your pile first wins The Well; the fewest cards wins The Hot Potato and The Poisoned Gift.

The full explanation: how a game of Dobble Kids goes

Getting started: before the first game, the rules suggest turning two cards face up and finding the match together, again and again, until everyone sees that there is always one. After that there are no turns. Everyone looks at once, and the first player to say the shared picture's name out loud takes, places or gets rid of a card, depending on the mini-game.

The five mini-games: in The Tower you collect cards from a face-up centre pile, and the most cards wins. In The Well you race to get rid of your own pile onto the centre card. The Hot Potato is played over several rounds: match your card with another player's and hand it over, and the fewest cards at the end wins. In The Poisoned Gift you put the centre card onto another player's card, and the fewest cards wins. In The Triplet, nine cards lie face up and you hunt for a picture shared by three of them.

Ties and doubts: the first player to call out the name wins the card; if two call together, the first to take or place the card wins. A tie for first place is settled by a one-card face-off. With very young children, play a few practice rounds of one mini-game before keeping score.

How it differs from our Dobble page: classic Dobble (Funskool item 9409000) is the same race with 55 cards, 8 pictures a card and the same five mini-games for 2 to 8 players, but it is rated 6 and up and its symbols are a general mix of everyday things. Dobble Kids (item 9409100) swaps them for toys and things from a child's world and is rated 4 and up. It is not the older Dobble Kids with 30 cards of 6 animals each for 2 to 5 players, which many reviews and videos describe.

About the editions

Buy Funskool's tin. Funskool has made Dobble in India since its 2023 partnership with Asmodee, and Funskool's own page for Dobble Kids (item 9409100) gives India as the country of origin, with Funskool India Ltd in Chennai as the maker. Our Amazon.in link goes to this Funskool tin. Imported Dobble Kids tins are the same game only if they are the 55-card version; older imports have 30 animal cards for 2 to 5 players. For children from 6 and adults, see our Dobble page for the classic deck.

Before you choose

  • The tin should say Dobble Kids and name Funskool; Funskool's item code is 9409100, and an Indian store lists its barcode as 8901383940919
  • Count the cards: there should be 55 round cards, with pictures of toys and everyday things such as a teddy bear, a school bag and a balloon
  • A tin of 30 cards with 6 animals each is the older Dobble Kids, a different version for 2 to 5 players
  • Test a few random pairs: in the real deck any two cards share exactly one picture
  • Spot-the-match decks under other names, or with no brand, are not the official game; check that the listing names Funskool

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews of the 55-card Dobble Kids, so this summary leans on Zygomatic's description and rules, on a review of the older Dobble Kids and on what is known about classic Dobble. Zygomatic pitches it as a way to introduce little ones to Dobble, with pictures of familiar childhood things that are quick to name. A UK parent reviewer gave the older animal version full marks, praising short, exciting games that adults and children enjoyed together and a sturdy little tin. The deck works on the same clever maths as classic Dobble, so expect the same strengths, and the same loud arguments over who called it first.

What people love

  • Pictures of toys and everyday things that young children can name straight away
  • Five quick mini-games from one deck, each over in a few minutes
  • A small tin that slips into a bag for trips and visits
  • Quick-eyed children can beat the adults, which keeps them coming back

Common complaints

  • It is noisy, and ties over who called first need the tie-break rule
  • The youngest players need a few practice rounds before the one-match idea clicks
  • Children who outgrow it will want the classic deck, which plays the same way

Questions people ask about Dobble Kids

What is the difference between Dobble and Dobble Kids?

They play the same way: 55 round cards, 8 pictures on each, one match between any two cards and the same five mini-games for 2 to 8 players. Dobble Kids uses pictures of toys and everyday things from a child's world and is rated 4 and up, while classic Dobble is rated 6 and up.

How many cards are in Dobble Kids?

Funskool's Dobble Kids has 55 cards, as its box and Zygomatic's current Dobble Kids say. The older Asmodee Dobble Kids, still seen in some shops and videos, had 30 cards with 6 animals each.

What age is Dobble Kids for?

The box is rated 4 and up. Younger children can join if an adult helps them name the pictures, and older children and adults can play too, though children from 6 may prefer classic Dobble.

How many players can play Dobble Kids?

From 2 to 8. Everyone plays at the same time, so a big group of cousins doesn't mean a long wait between turns.

Is Funskool Dobble Kids made in India?

Funskool's product page gives India as the country of origin and names Funskool India Ltd, Chennai, as the maker. Funskool announced in 2023 that it would make and sell Dobble in India through a partnership with Asmodee.
