Great for Families and friends who enjoy Wordle, anagrams and other word puzzles

Think twice if Some of your group aren't confident with English spelling: unscrambling words is the whole game

How we rate it

Learning curve. The rules take a minute, so it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO. The puzzles are another matter: Gouda makes the categories narrow on purpose, and long jumbled words take some cracking.

Luck & skill. Everyone races on the same card, so luck plays little part; quick unscrambling and a wide English vocabulary win most cards.

Interaction. Everyone races on every card at once, and arguing over who called the category first is part of the game.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and put the pile in the middle; nothing else to set up.

Reading. Every player reads the three short jumbled English words on each card, and someone checks the answers on the back.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Cryptic Categories right for you?

Great if

  • Families and friends who enjoy Wordle, anagrams and other word puzzles
  • Groups of 3 to 8 where everyone races on every card, so nobody sits out
  • Teenagers and adults who like a brain-teaser more than a trivia quiz
  • A small box to take on holidays or to a cousins' night

Skip it if

  • Some of your group aren't confident with English spelling: unscrambling words is the whole game
  • Your children are under 10 or don't enjoy puzzles: the maker says 10 and up
  • You want a slow strategy game; this is a shouting race

How Cryptic Categories plays

Set-up: shuffle the 200 double-sided cards and stack them. The front of each card shows three English words with their letters scrambled; the back shows the words unscrambled and the category they belong to.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: This is an English word game: each card shows three English words with their letters jumbled, and you must unscramble them and name the category, such as types of bears or countries in Asia. Players need confident English spelling and vocabulary. We found no Hindi or regional-language version.

The back shows the answer. The first right call wins the card, and the first to 7 cards wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Cryptic Categories goes

A turn: turn over a card so everyone can see the scrambled side. Players unscramble the words in their heads and race to call out the category. In the maker's sample cards, LCBKA, LAROP and ZZLYIRG become black, polar and grizzly (types of bears), and DILNTAHA, MATNEIV and AINDI become Thailand, Vietnam and India (countries in Asia). The back of the card settles who was right, and the first correct call wins the card.

Why it is tricky: Gouda says the categories are narrower than they look: not just colours but shades of red, not just foods but types of beans. Some cards are word links instead; one sample card has light, screen and flower, which all fit after the same short word, so even once you have unscrambled them you still have to spot the connection.

Winning and tips: the first player to collect 7 cards wins. With younger players, play in pairs, so a child can unscramble while an adult spots the link. Agree before you start how close an answer must be: calling out 'bears' for types of bears is usually fair.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, videos or forum threads about Cryptic Categories, so this rests on Gouda Games' own description and pictures. On paper it is a quick word race with two steps: unscramble three jumbled words, then spot what links them, and the maker makes the links deliberately narrow, like types of beans rather than foods. That should please groups who enjoy anagrams and word puzzles, and frustrate players who are slow with English spelling. Because everyone races on the same card, the quickest solver at the table will win most rounds.

What people love

  • Two puzzles on every card: unscramble the words, then find the link
  • Everyone plays every card, so there is no waiting for a turn
  • Learned in a minute; the challenge is in the cards, not the rules
  • The answers are printed on the back, so there is no doubt about who was right

Common complaints

  • Hard going for anyone less at home with English words
  • One fast solver can win most cards and leave the others behind
  • No independent reviews yet, so it is hard to say how long 200 cards stay fresh

Gouda Games, a Skillmatics brand. Its product page names Grasper Global Pvt Limited, Mumbai, as the manufacturer and gives India as the country of origin.
