Great for Families with children of 10 and up: every card has an easy, a medium and a hard riddle, so a lucky roll gives younger players a fair chance

Think twice if Some of your group aren't comfortable in English: every riddle is an English rhyme

How we rate it

Learning curve. Roll, read, ding, answer. Anyone can learn it in a couple of minutes, so it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO, even if the hard riddles take some thought.

Luck & skill. The die and the card decide how hard your riddle is, which is luck. But over a game, the quickest and most word-wise player collects the cards.

Interaction. Everyone races to answer every riddle, so the whole table is involved all the time, and a wrong ding hands the card to the reader.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards, put the dinger in the middle and keep the die handy; nothing else to set up.

Reading. One player reads each short riddle aloud, so the reader needs to be comfortable reading English rhymes; the others only listen.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Dare to Ding right for you?

Great if

  • Families with children of 10 and up: every card has an easy, a medium and a hard riddle, so a lucky roll gives younger players a fair chance
  • Big get-togethers: the box says 3 to 8 players, enough for cousins, friends and the grown-ups
  • Anyone who loves riddles, puns and quick thinking
  • A small gift that takes a minute to explain to a new group

Skip it if

  • Some of your group aren't comfortable in English: every riddle is an English rhyme
  • You want planning or strategy; this is quick wits and fast hands
  • Your children are under 10: the box says 10 and up, and the hard riddles need a wide vocabulary

How Dare to Ding plays

Set-up: shuffle the 150 cards into a face-down pile and put the dinger, a bell, in the middle where everyone can reach it. Keep the wooden die handy. There is no board and no score sheet; the cards you win are your score.

  • Time to teach: about 3 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Every riddle is a short rhyme in English, with a clue to the answer such as 'Starts with H' or 'Has RR'. One player reads each card aloud, but to answer you need good English and an ear for wordplay. We found no Hindi or regional-language version.

The full explanation: how a game of Dare to Ding goes

A turn: roll the die, then draw the top card. Every card carries three riddles, marked easy, medium and hard, and the die decides which one you read. Read out the clue first, such as 'Starts with H', then the riddle. Gouda's own example: 'I do have stars, but I'm found on land, I can be small and cosy, or lavish and grand!'

Answering: the first player to crack it slams the dinger and then has five seconds to give the answer. Shout 'Hotel!' and you win the card. A wrong answer hands the card to the reader instead, so wild guesses have a cost.

Winning: the first player to collect 7 cards wins. With 450 riddles in the box, a group can play many games before riddles start coming round again.

Tips: in a mixed-age group, play in pairs so a child sits with an adult, or try a house rule where the youngest players answer the easy riddles on their own. Agree before you start how to settle a tie on the bell, because arguments over who dinged first are part of the noise.

  • Inside are 150 cards, each with an easy, a medium and a hard riddle, plus a dinger bell and a wooden die

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, forum threads or videos about Dare to Ding beyond Gouda Games' own, so this rests on the maker's description and pictures. On paper it is a quick, noisy riddle race: one player reads a rhyming riddle with a clue to the answer, and the first to slam the bell and answer within five seconds wins the card. The easy, medium and hard riddle on every card should help mixed-age families, but it needs good English, and a group that plays often may start to remember answers.

What people love

  • Takes a minute to learn: roll, read, ding, answer
  • Three levels on every card, so children of 10 and up and adults can play together
  • Plays with 3 to 8, so it works for a houseful of cousins
  • Made in India, in a small box that travels well

Common complaints

  • English only, and the riddles need a feel for English wordplay
  • No independent reviews yet, so it's hard to say how soon a group starts to repeat riddles
  • Bell games get loud, and arguments over who dinged first come with it

Questions people ask about Dare to Ding

What is the dinger in Dare to Ding?

It is the bell that sits in the middle of the table; Gouda Games lists it as 'a bell (dinger)'. When you think you know the answer you slam it, and then you have five seconds to say your answer out loud.

What age is Dare to Ding for?

The box says 10 and up, for 3 to 8 players, though Gouda's own shop shows 12+ in places. Each card has an easy, a medium and a hard riddle and the die picks which one is read, so children of 10 or 11 will get riddles they can crack, while the hard ones suit teenagers and adults.

How many riddles are in Dare to Ding?

There are 150 cards with three riddles each, 450 in all; the box rounds it down to '400+'. Gouda's product text mentions 120 cards, but its own pictures and the box back say 150.

Is Gouda Games' Dare to Ding the same as Skillmatics Dare to Ding?

As far as we can tell, yes. Gouda Games is the party-game brand of Grasper Global, the Mumbai company behind Skillmatics, and abroad the game is sold under the Skillmatics name with the same 150 cards, dinger and wooden die. In India it is sold as Gouda Games, and the maker's box back says it is made in India.

Is Dare to Ding available in Hindi?

We found only an English version. The riddles are rhymes and wordplay in English, so everyone answering needs to be comfortable in English to enjoy it.
