Great for Groups who love wordplay and groan happily at a bad pun

Think twice if Some of your group aren't comfortable in English: the answers are English phrases and sayings

How we rate it

Learning curve. Turn over a card and shout the phrase: it takes a minute to explain, so it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO. Cracking a tricky pun is the hard part, not the rules.

Luck & skill. Everyone races on the same card, so there is little luck beyond which puns come up. Quick thinking and a good feel for English expressions win most cards.

Interaction. Everyone guesses at once on every card, so the whole table is involved all the time, and arguments over who said it first are part of the fun.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and put the pile where everyone can see the top card; nothing else to set up.

Reading. Each card is a picture plus a short clue giving the number of words, which one player reads out. The rest happens in your head and out loud.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Pun Intended right for you?

Great if

  • Groups who love wordplay and groan happily at a bad pun
  • Big get-togethers: the box says 2 to 10 players, and everyone guesses on every card
  • Mixed groups of teenagers and adults, since the rules take a minute to explain
  • A small, light gift for the family joker

Skip it if

  • Some of your group aren't comfortable in English: the answers are English phrases and sayings
  • You want strategy or turns to plan; this is a race to see the joke first
  • Your children are under about 10: the maker says 10 and up, and younger children may not know the expressions the puns are built on

How Pun Intended plays

Set-up: shuffle the 200 picture cards and keep the pile face down. The box also comes with two card cases. There is no board and no score sheet; the cards you win are your score.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: There is very little to read: each card is a picture with a note of how many words are in the answer, and one player reads that out. But the answers in the maker's samples are everyday English phrases, such as 'salad dressing' and 'mood swings', so players need to know English expressions well to crack them. We found no Hindi or regional-language version.

The full explanation: how a game of Pun Intended goes

A turn: one player turns over the top card and reads out its clue, which tells everyone how many words are in the answer. The picture is a visual joke on a common phrase: in Gouda's own photos, two-word cards stand for 'salad dressing', 'reading glasses' and 'mood swings'. Everyone else stares at the picture and shouts guesses, and the first to say the phrase correctly wins the card.

Winning: Gouda's product page, its FAQ and its photo of the box back say the first player to collect 5 cards wins. One of the maker's how-to-play pictures says the player who cracks the most cards wins instead, which makes a longer game. Agree which rule you are using before you start.

Tips: pass the job of turning over cards around the table, so everyone gets to guess. In a big group, play in pairs, so a younger player can team up with an older cousin, and if a card has everyone stuck, a fair house rule is to give the first letter. Gouda's FAQ puts a typical game at 20 to 25 minutes.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, videos or forum threads about Gouda Games' Pun Intended, so this rests on the maker's own description, photos and short videos. On paper it is a quick, loud picture-pun race: a card goes down, everyone stares, and the first to see the phrase in the picture takes the card. It should suit groups who enjoy wordplay and know everyday English expressions well, and it will be harder going for players who don't. The maker's pages and one of its pictures give different endings, so agree on one before you play.

What people love

  • Explained in a minute, and up to 10 people can play
  • Every card is a short puzzle for the whole table, so nobody waits for a turn
  • 200 cards in a small box that is easy to take to a party or on a trip
  • An Indian-made party game built on wordplay rather than trivia

Common complaints

  • The answers are English phrases, so it is hard on players less at home in English
  • No independent reviews yet, so it is hard to say how soon a group starts remembering the answers
  • The ending is unclear: first to 5 cards on the maker's page and box back, most cards in one maker picture
