Great for Families who play dumb charades at every get-together and want a ready-made song list

Think twice if Your group is shy about acting in front of others

How we rate it

Learning curve. Spin, draw, act: anyone who has played dumb charades knows it already, so it sits at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. The spinner and the card you draw are luck, and some songs are far easier to act than others; a good actor and a team that knows its film music win over a game.

Interaction. Every turn is a team effort, with one player acting and the rest shouting guesses, and the other team watching the clock.

Set-up. Split into teams, put the four era decks and the spinner in the middle, and find a phone timer.

Reading. Only the actor reads a short song title; everyone else watches and guesses.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Bollywood Beats right for you?

Great if

  • Families who play dumb charades at every get-together and want a ready-made song list
  • Big mixed-age groups: the cards run from 1950s classics to 2020s hits, so grandparents and teenagers each get their decade
  • House parties, sangeet nights and festival gatherings where people like to perform
  • A gift for the family's biggest Hindi film music fan

Skip it if

  • Your group is shy about acting in front of others
  • Some players don't follow Hindi film songs
  • There are only two or three of you: it is built for teams

How Bollywood Beats plays

Set-up: split into two teams, or more for a big crowd. The 200 song cards make four decks, one for each era on the spinner: the 1950s-60s, 1970s-80s, 1990s-2000s and 2010s-2020s. Keep a phone timer ready, because the box holds only the cards, the spinner and the instructions.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Each card names a Hindi film song, printed in English letters (for example Chaiya Chaiya or Balam Pichkari), and the player acting keeps it secret and mimes it without words. There is little to read, but guessing needs a good ear for Hindi film music across the decades. We found no version in another language.

The full explanation: how a game of Bollywood Beats goes

A turn: a player from the acting team spins the wheel, which lands on one of the four eras, and draws a card from that era's deck without showing it. They then have one minute to get their team to name the song, using gestures, breaking the title into words or doing the song's hook step, but no speaking. Gouda's sample cards include Khaike Paan Banaraswala, Chaiya Chaiya, Dola Re Dola and Balam Pichkari.

Winning: a song your team names in time wins you the card, and the first team to collect 7 cards wins the game.

Tips: take turns between teams and change the actor each time, so everyone gets a go. Mix ages in each team so someone knows the old songs and someone the new ones. Agree beforehand whether humming the tune counts as words; Gouda only says no words. With little children, let them act on a team with an adult who can whisper the song.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, videos or forum threads about Bollywood Beats, so this rests on Gouda Games' own description and pictures. On paper it turns the family game of dumb charades into a ready-made box: a spinner picks the era, a card gives the song, and your team has a minute to get it from your acting. That should be a lot of fun for performers and mixed-age groups, where older players know the classics and younger ones the recent hits. It won't work for a shy group or for anyone who doesn't follow Hindi film music, and you need your own timer.

What people love

  • A ready-made list of 200 songs, so nobody has to think of one on the spot
  • The spinner spreads the songs from the 1950s to the 2020s, so every generation gets its turn
  • Team play keeps everyone involved, even people who would rather not act
  • Rules that anyone who has played dumb charades already knows

Common complaints

  • No timer in the box
  • Needs players who are happy to perform
  • No independent reviews yet, so it's hard to say how soon a group starts to repeat songs
