The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Children of about 4 to 7 who already know tic-tac-toe (zero kaata) and want more

Think twice if Your children are 8 or older: the levels are pitched at preschool and early primary years

How we rate it

Learning curve. Make a row of three that matches: a 4-year-old can learn Level 1 in a few minutes, which puts it with Connect 4 at 1 on our scale. Level 2's cards add a little more to think about.

Luck & skill. Level 1 is mostly about where you place tiles; in Level 2 the face-down tiles, power cards and mystery tiles bring in luck.

Interaction. Both players build rows on the same board, so a tile you place can block or help the other player, as in tic-tac-toe.

Set-up. Open the board, pick a theme and sort out its tiles, and put the scoreboards and marker to one side; add the cards and mystery tiles for Level 2.

Reading. Only the word theme needs reading three-letter words; parents read the short guides.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Tic-Tac-Go! right for you?

Great if

  • Children of about 4 to 7 who already know tic-tac-toe (zero kaata) and want more
  • Parents who want one game that practises colours, shapes, early words and naming feelings
  • Two siblings, or a grandparent and grandchild, on a quiet afternoon
  • A birthday or return gift from an Indian maker

Skip it if

  • Your children are 8 or older: the levels are pitched at preschool and early primary years
  • You want a game for a big group: it is built around two players
  • You only need plain tic-tac-toe: a pencil and paper, or a simple wooden set, does that

How Tic-Tac-Go! plays

Tic-Tac-Go! takes the three-in-a-row idea of tic-tac-toe, which many Indian children know as zero kaata, and plays it with picture tiles. The box has a game board, 50 double-sided tiles showing letters, colours, shapes and emotions, 14 Power Up! cards, 10 Magic Mystery Tiles, 8 bonus challenge cards, two wipe-clean scoreboards with a marker, four trophies and three short guides.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Only the word theme needs English: children make three-letter words such as CAT or POT, and two word guides list words to try. The colour, shape and emotion themes need no reading, so younger children and grandparents who don't read English can play those.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Choose

Pick a theme (colour, shape, word or emotions) and a level. In Level 1 the tiles lie face up; in Level 2 they are stacked face down, with power cards and mystery tiles.

  2. 2
    Match

Take turns placing tiles to make a row of three that matches the theme, such as three red tiles or three letters that spell a word.

  3. 3
    Win

Each row scores. In Level 1 the first to 5 points wins; in Level 2 the highest score when the tiles run out wins, and winners collect trophies.

The full explanation: how a game of Tic-Tac-Go! goes

GiniMini's 'Game Levels' guide sets out two levels. In Level 1 you choose one theme (colour, shape, word or emotions), spread that theme's tiles face up, and take turns making a row of three that matches, scoring each time. The first player to reach 5 points wins, and the power cards, mystery tiles and challenge cards stay in the box.

Level 2 is for thinking ahead. The themed tiles are shuffled and stacked face down, so you don't know what you will get, and Power Up! cards, bonus challenge cards and Magic Mystery Tiles add surprises. The game ends when all the tiles are used, and the highest score wins. Across games, GiniMini's goal is to collect all four Championship Trophies and become the 'Ultimate Tic-Tac-Go Master'.

The themes change what a matching row means: three tiles of one colour, three of one shape, three letters that spell a word, or three matching feelings. The word guides list three-letter words such as CAT, POT and HUT for the word theme, and GiniMini's 'Time To Play' guide gives short games such as Colour Match and Shape Challenge.

Start a 4-year-old on colours or shapes at Level 1, then try emotions, which give a gentle way to talk about feelings, and keep words for when they know their letter sounds. Move to Level 2 once they can win Level 1 without help. Keep the scoreboard marker away from toddlers.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, blog posts, videos or forum threads about Tic-Tac-Go!, so this rests on GiniMini's own pages and pictures. On paper it is a sensible way to stretch tic-tac-toe for preschoolers: the same row-of-three idea, played with colours, shapes, early words and feelings, with a simple level for 4-year-olds and a second level with surprises. It is made in India by an Indore company and comes with plenty of parts for a small box. GiniMini doesn't publish the full rules or explain the power cards online, so read the guides in the box first.

What people love

  • Builds on tic-tac-toe, which most children already know
  • Four themes in one box: colours, shapes, early words and emotions
  • A simple level for 4-year-olds and a harder level with power cards
  • Made in India by GiniMini, with wipe-clean scoreboards and trophies to collect

Common complaints

  • GiniMini doesn't publish the rules or explain the power cards and mystery tiles online
  • Built for two players, so it doesn't suit a big group

Questions people ask about Tic-Tac-Go!

How is Tic-Tac-Go! different from tic-tac-toe?

You still try to make a row of three, but with picture tiles instead of crosses and zeros. A row counts when the tiles match in the theme you chose (colour, shape, word or emotions), and the harder level adds power cards, mystery tiles and challenge cards.

What age is Tic-Tac-Go! for?

The box says 4 years and up. Four-year-olds can play the colour and shape themes at Level 1; the word theme suits children of about 5 or 6 who know their letter sounds.

How many players can play Tic-Tac-Go!?

GiniMini doesn't print a number, but it comes with two scoreboards and plays like tic-tac-toe, so it is a game for two. With more children, play in two teams.

Is Tic-Tac-Go! made in India?

Yes. GiniMini's own product page marks it Made in India, and the box names Riseom Solutions of Indore, the company behind GiniMini and ClassMonitor, as the manufacturer.

Does my child need to read to play?

Only for the word theme, where three letters must spell a short English word. The colour, shape and emotion themes need no reading at all.
