Great for Big family get-togethers: the box has ten tokens and the listing says up to eight players

Think twice if You want a game that reliably ends within an hour

How we rate it

Learning curve. The basic loop is simple, but mortgages, building evenly, auctions and jail add a few more rules than a pure family game, which puts it with Ticket to Ride at 2 on our scale.

Luck & skill. The dice decide where you land and so what you can buy. Trading, auctions and when to build reward good judgement, but luck usually matters more.

Interaction. You pay each other rent, bid in auctions and bargain over trades all game, and the aim is to bankrupt everyone else.

Set-up. Sort the notes, Title Deed cards, houses and hotels into the banker's tray, give everyone the starting money, shuffle the Chance and Community Chest cards and put the tokens on GO. Counting out the money is the slowest part.

Reading. Title deeds and the Chance and Community Chest cards carry short English text that is read aloud.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Monopoly Deluxe Edition right for you?

Great if

  • Big family get-togethers: the box has ten tokens and the listing says up to eight players
  • Families who already know Monopoly and want sturdier wooden houses and hotels
  • A Diwali or birthday gift that feels a step up from the standard box
  • Whoever ends up as banker, because the tray keeps notes, deeds and buildings in order

Skip it if

  • You want a game that reliably ends within an hour
  • Your group dislikes being knocked out, because bankrupt players sit out until the end
  • You already own a Monopoly set and want new rules rather than nicer pieces

A place on the honours list

Good company to be in.

How Monopoly Deluxe Edition plays

Set-up: put the board in the middle and the banker's tray beside it, with the notes, Title Deed cards, wooden houses and hotels sorted into it. The banker gives everyone the same starting money, the Chance and Community Chest cards are shuffled, and each player picks one of the ten tokens and puts it on GO.

  • Time to teach: about 10-15 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Title deeds and the Chance and Community Chest cards have short English text that someone reads aloud, and the board, money and rules booklet are in English. Children who read a little can play with a grown-up's help. We found no Hindi or other Indian-language version of this Deluxe box.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Roll

Roll both dice and move your token. Each time you pass GO, the bank pays you your salary.

  2. 2
    Buy

Buy the unowned property you land on, or the bank auctions it. Land on someone else's property and you pay them rent.

  3. 3
    Build

Own a whole colour group and you can add wooden houses and then a hotel, evenly across the group, to raise the rent.

  4. 4
    Win

Players who can't pay their debts go bankrupt and drop out. The last player left wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Monopoly Deluxe Edition goes

On your turn you roll the two dice and move round the board. Every time you pass GO, the bank pays you a salary. Land on a property nobody owns and you may buy it for the amount printed on the board; if you don't want it, the official rules say the bank auctions it and anyone can bid.

Land on someone else's property and you pay them rent. Once you own every property in a colour group, the rent there doubles and you can start building wooden houses, then a hotel, which push the rent up sharply. Houses go up evenly across the group. Chance and Community Chest cards, taxes and jail add twists along the way.

If you can't pay what you owe, you sell buildings or mortgage property. If that still isn't enough, you are bankrupt and out of the game, and the last player left in wins.

Tip: the Free Parking jackpot and skipping auctions are house rules that make the game much longer. If you're short of time, play by the printed rules and agree on a finishing time before you start, then count up who is richest when it arrives.

Contents from the list printed on the back of the E8276 box (product code E82760000, © 2019 Hasbro), as shown in an Indian store's photo. Compared with the standard Hasbro set on our main Monopoly page (8 tokens, plastic houses and hotels, no tray), this box adds two tokens, wooden buildings, a banker's tray and a longer booklet.

About the editions

This Deluxe Edition is made in India: the back of the box says Funskool (India) Ltd. in Chennai makes it for Hasbro India, and it gives Hasbro India's Mumbai address and consumer helpline. Our Amazon.in link goes to that Hasbro India box, item E8276. Our main Monopoly page links a different Hasbro set, an imported eight-token box with plastic houses and hotels.

Before you choose

  • The box front should carry the Hasbro Gaming and Monopoly logos with the words Deluxe Edition, and the back should show product code E82760000, Funskool (India) Ltd., Chennai as maker and Hasbro India Toys Private Limited, Mumbai as marketer.
  • Check the contents against the list on the box: gameboard, 28 Title Deed cards, 16 Chance and 16 Community Chest cards, 10 tokens, 32 wooden houses, 12 wooden hotels, 2 dice, a pack of Monopoly money, the banker's tray and instructions.
  • The houses and hotels should be wooden. Plastic buildings mean you have a standard Monopoly box, not the Deluxe Edition.
  • The back of the Indian box gives Hasbro India's consumer helpline, 1800 22 3800.
  • Indian 'Business' games from other makers are separate products with their own boards and money, not Hasbro's Monopoly.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent review of this Indian Deluxe box, so this rests on what writers say about Monopoly itself. Its defenders point to the buying, dealing and auction phases, the big swings of fortune and the way it brings families together around one table. The usual complaints are that it runs long, that the dice decide a lot and that bankrupt players sit out, and the most-voted forum advice for a shorter game is to drop house rules and play by the printed rules. The Deluxe box changes the feel of the pieces, not the game.

What people love

  • Everyone knows the idea, so grandparents, parents and children can sit down together quickly
  • Buying, trading and auctions give real decisions and lots of table talk
  • Big swings of fortune make for games people remember
  • Children practise counting money and weighing up deals without noticing

Common complaints

  • Games can drag on for hours, especially with house rules
  • Dice luck decides a lot of the result
  • Players who go bankrupt early have to sit and watch until the end

Questions people ask about Monopoly Deluxe Edition

What is the difference between Monopoly Deluxe Edition and normal Monopoly?

The rules are the same. The Deluxe box (Hasbro India item E8276) has 10 tokens instead of 8, wooden houses and hotels instead of plastic ones, a banker's tray to keep the money and deeds organised, and a longer booklet with the history of the game. The standard Hasbro set on our main Monopoly page has 8 tokens and plastic buildings.

Is Monopoly Deluxe Edition made in India?

Yes. The back of the E8276 box says it is manufactured by Funskool (India) Ltd., Chennai, for Hasbro India Toys Private Limited, Mumbai. Our Amazon.in link goes to this Hasbro India box.

Why does a Hasbro Monopoly box say Funskool on the back?

Funskool was set up in 1987 as a joint venture between MRF and Hasbro. Hasbro left the venture in 2014, but Funskool still makes products under licence from Hasbro. This Deluxe box is an official Hasbro India product that Funskool manufactures for it.

How many people can play Monopoly Deluxe Edition?

The listing says 2 to 8, and the box has 10 tokens to choose from. With more than five or six players each round takes longer and the banker has more to do, so for a big group it helps to have one person act as banker.

How long does a game of Monopoly take?

Usually well over an hour, and Wikipedia gives a range of 1 to 6 hours. Playing by the official rules, with auctions and no Free Parking jackpot, keeps money moving. If you need a fixed end, agree on a finishing time before you start.
