Great for Long train journeys and holidays, when the full-size Monopoly box is too big to pack

Think twice if You often play with five or six: the travel box has four tokens and is for 2 to 4 players

How we rate it

Learning curve. These are the full Monopoly rules, with auctions, mortgages and building evenly, which puts it at 2 on our scale, alongside Ticket to Ride and Codenames. Children of 8 usually need an adult to run the Bank the first few times.

Luck & skill. The dice decide where you land, and now the Chance and Community Chest tasks too, but deciding what to buy, when to build and which deals to make still matters.

Interaction. Rent, auctions and trades put players in each other's pockets all game, and being bankrupted knocks you out.

Set-up. The first time, an adult sticks the board label on, presses out the cards and trims the tokens, which takes 10 minutes or so. After that, the Banker hands out 1,500 to each player, tokens go on GO and the deeds, houses and hotels come out of storage in about five minutes.

Reading. Title Deeds and the printed Chance and Community Chest list are in English; someone reads out a task whenever a player lands on one of those spaces.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Monopoly Grab and Go right for you?

Great if

  • Long train journeys and holidays, when the full-size Monopoly box is too big to pack
  • Families of three or four who already know Monopoly and want the same rules in a smaller box
  • Children from 8 who are ready to handle money, rent and simple deals with an adult alongside
  • A small gift for a Monopoly-loving family that travels a lot

Skip it if

  • You often play with five or six: the travel box has four tokens and is for 2 to 4 players
  • You want a short game: it is still full Monopoly, so a game can run well over an hour
  • There are toddlers at home: the tokens, dice, houses and hotels are small parts, not for children under 3

How Monopoly Grab and Go plays

Set-up: the first time, an adult sticks the two-part gameboard label onto the board, using the Monopoly logo in the middle to line up the halves, then presses the Title Deed cards, the four Get Out of Jail Free cards and the Chance and Community Chest card out of the card sheet and trims the tokens off their plastic frame. For each game, one player is the Banker and gives everyone 1,500 in Monopoly money; each player puts a token on GO, and the highest roll of two dice starts.

  • Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The Title Deed cards and the printed Chance and Community Chest list are in English, and someone reads out a task whenever a player lands on one of those spaces. The money and rents are plain numbers, so once one person handles the reading, children and grandparents can play along in Hindi, Marathi or any mix of languages.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Roll

Roll two dice and move clockwise. Doubles give you another roll, but three doubles in a row send you to Jail.

  2. 2
    Buy

Buy an unowned property or let the Banker auction it. On someone else's property, pay rent if they ask before the next roll; on Chance or Community Chest, roll three dice and do the task on the list.

  3. 3
    Bankrupt

Build houses and hotels on full colour sets to raise rents. Players who can't pay are out, and the last one left wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Monopoly Grab and Go goes

A turn: roll two dice and move clockwise. Land on a street, railroad or utility nobody owns and you either buy it for the amount printed on its space or the Banker auctions it, with anyone able to bid. Land on someone else's property and you pay rent, but only if the owner asks for it before the next player rolls. Doubles give you another roll; three doubles in a row send you straight to Jail.

Chance and Community Chest work differently from the big box: there are no card decks. When you land on one of those spaces, roll all three dice and carry out the task with that number on the printed Chance or Community Chest list. Roll the Get Out of Jail Free task and you take one of the four Get Out of Jail Free cards, which you can keep, sell or trade.

Building and winning: own a whole colour set and its rent doubles, and you can build houses evenly across it, then swap four houses for a hotel. Short of money, you sell buildings back to the Bank for half what you paid or mortgage property; if you still can't pay, you are bankrupt and out. The last player left wins. Hasbro's tips for keeping the game moving are to always auction unbought property, never lend money and never put cash on Free Parking.

How it differs from our full-size Monopoly page: the box on that page (Hasbro's item C1009) takes 2 to 6 players with eight tokens, two dice and decks of Chance and Community Chest cards on a big folding board. The travel box keeps the same rules, the same 32 houses and 12 hotels and the full set of Title Deeds, but plays on a small board that stores the pieces, with four plastic tokens, three dice and printed Chance and Community Chest lists.

About the editions

This travel box is made in India: Hasbro's own photo of the 2023 box back reads 'Made in India', and the listing behind our Amazon.in link gives India as the country of origin and names Hasbro India Toys, Mumbai. Our Amazon.in link goes to that box, Hasbro's item F8256, in Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in. If you mostly play at home, or with five or six people, see our full-size Monopoly page instead.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Hasbro Gaming and Monopoly logos and the Grab & Go name. Hasbro's item number for the 2023 travel box is F8256; the older box is B1002.
  • Check the contents against Hasbro's list: gameboard, gameboard label, card sheet, 4 plastic tokens, money pack, 3 dice, 32 houses, 12 hotels and a game guide.
  • The real travel game uses three dice and a printed Chance and Community Chest list instead of card decks, and its board stores the pieces.
  • Hasbro's barcode for F8256 is 195166231044. Toys sold in India should also carry the ISI mark.
  • Small 'mini Monopoly' or business-style travel sets from other brands are different games. A listing that uses the Monopoly name but names another brand, or none, is not Hasbro's.

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews or forum threads about the 2023 travel box, so this summary leans on Hasbro's own description and rules, and on the classic game it shrinks. Hasbro pitches it as the same Monopoly in a travel size, for road trips, train and plane journeys and holidays, with storage for the pieces built in. Hasbro launched its Grab and Go range in India in 2019 with a TV advert of a family on a train, and Monopoly was part of it. For Indian families it is full Monopoly in a bag-sized box; the trade-offs are a small board, tiny pieces, four tokens and a game that is still as long as the big one.

What people love

  • The full Monopoly rules, auctions and building included, in a box that fits a bag
  • The pieces store in the board, so less goes missing between games
  • The full 32 houses and 12 hotels, so nobody runs short of buildings
  • Three dice and a printed list replace two card decks, one less thing to shuffle and lose

Common complaints

  • Small tokens, houses and paper money are easy to lose on a moving train or in a car
  • Only four tokens, so it doesn't stretch to bigger family groups
  • A full game can still take an hour or more, which is long for a short journey

Questions people ask about Monopoly Grab and Go

What is the difference between Monopoly and Monopoly Grab and Go?

Grab and Go is Hasbro's travel version of Monopoly, with the same buying, rent, building and bankruptcy rules. It plays on a small board that stores the pieces, has four tokens instead of eight and takes 2 to 4 players, and you roll three dice against a printed list instead of drawing Chance and Community Chest cards.

How do Chance and Community Chest work in Monopoly Grab and Go?

There are no card decks. When you land on a Chance or Community Chest space, you roll all three dice and do the task with that number on the printed list; for example, a roll of 8 on Chance means Go to Jail. If you roll Get Out of Jail Free, you take one of the four Get Out of Jail Free cards.

How many players can play Monopoly Grab and Go?

Two to four. The box has four plastic tokens, and Hasbro rates it for ages 8 and up. For bigger family gatherings, the full-size Monopoly takes up to six.

Is Monopoly Grab and Go made in India?

Yes. Hasbro's own photo of the 2023 box back reads 'Made in India', and the listing behind our Amazon.in link gives India as the country of origin and names Hasbro India Toys, Mumbai.

Does Monopoly Grab and Go use rupees and Indian cities?

No. It is the classic game with Monopoly's own money, and Hasbro's 2023 leaflet uses the American board's railroads and street names. Hasbro's Monopoly India Edition, with Indian cities, is a separate full-size game.
