The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Holidays and train journeys: the box is about 16 x 6 x 6 cm and weighs around 330 g

Think twice if You want the tall, loud crash of a party game; this tower starts at about 13 cm and falls from a much lower height

How we rate it

Learning curve. The same pull-and-stack rules as Classic Jenga, our reference game for 1. The smaller, lighter blocks change the feel, not the rules.

Luck & skill. Mostly a steady hand and nerve. Which blocks happen to be loose adds a little luck, and a thoughtful placement can leave the next player in trouble.

Interaction. Everyone shares one small tower and watches each pull; leaving it awkward for the next player is the only way to interfere.

Set-up. Stack 13 layers of three by hand on a flat, steady surface and square the sides with your palms; there is no sleeve listed. It takes about a minute.

Reading. Nothing to read during play; the rules on the box side are a few lines of English.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Jenga Mini right for you?

Great if

  • Holidays and train journeys: the box is about 16 x 6 x 6 cm and weighs around 330 g
  • Small tables at a cafe, a hostel or a grandparent's side table, where a full-size crash would send blocks everywhere
  • Return gifts at a child's birthday party, or a small add-on present for a cousin aged 6 and up
  • Solo play: the rules on the box suggest trying to beat your own tallest tower

Skip it if

  • You want the tall, loud crash of a party game; this tower starts at about 13 cm and falls from a much lower height
  • You like a stacking sleeve to build a neat tower; this box lists none, so you square it up by hand

How Jenga Mini plays

Build the tower first: three blocks per layer, each layer turned crossways to the one below. The contents list shows no stacking sleeve, so square the sides with your palms on a flat, steady surface. With 39 blocks you get 13 layers.

  • Time to teach: about 1 minute.
  • Reading and language: Nothing to read during play. The few lines of rules on the side of the box are in English, and one demonstration turn is enough in any language.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Pull

With one hand, take a block from anywhere below the highest finished layer. Touching blocks to find a loose one is allowed.

  2. 2
    Stack

Lay it on top and wait about ten seconds. If the tower stands, the next player goes.

  3. 3
    Win

Topple the tower and you are out. The last player to stack a block without a crash wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Jenga Mini goes

On your turn, use one hand to take a block from anywhere below the highest finished layer; you may touch blocks to find a loose one. Put it on top, finishing each layer of three before starting a new one, then wait about ten seconds, as the box rules say.

If the tower falls on your turn you are out, and the last player to stack a block without a crash wins. Playing alone, try to beat your own highest tower.

Because the blocks are 6 cm long and 1 cm thick, rather than about 7.5 by 1.5 cm in Classic Jenga, the tower is shorter and games end sooner. It is the same game in miniature, best for two or three players leaning over a small table.

  • 1Box

Box: 16 × 6 × 6 cm, 0.33 kg. Handy to know for gifting and travel.

Contents from the box's own contents panel (photographed on an Indian store's E8266 listing) and the Amazon.in listing details: 39 Jenga Mini hardwood blocks of 60 x 20 x 10 mm. No stacking sleeve or separate rules sheet is listed. Classic Jenga and the Tube Pack have 54 larger blocks (about 1.5 x 2.5 x 7.5 cm) and a sleeve. One Indian store gives the material as plastic, which the box contradicts.

About the editions

This is the Indian-made version, and our Amazon.in link goes to it: the box says it is manufactured by Funskool (India) in Chennai for Hasbro India Toys in Mumbai. Hasbro sells Jenga Mini abroad under its own item number, but there is no reason to import one.

Before you choose

  • Hasbro's box is tall and narrow, with the Jenga mini logo and the Hasbro Gaming name on the front.
  • The side panel should list 39 Jenga Mini hardwood blocks (60 x 20 x 10 mm), and the maker panel should name Funskool (India) Ltd., Chennai, making it for Hasbro India Toys Private Limited, Mumbai.
  • The blocks are plain, unnumbered wood. Small towers with coloured or numbered blocks, or with dice, are other products.
  • Mini 'tumbling tower' or 'stacking tower' sets from other brands are separate games; only Hasbro's box may use the Jenga name.

What reviewers and players say

Hardly anyone reviews Jenga Mini on its own; it is judged as the classic game shrunk down. Reviewers of Classic Jenga praise how accessible and tense it is, and child-development testers like the practice in steady hands and in weighing a risky move against a safe one, all of which carries over to the small tower. What you give up is size: 39 blocks build a 13-layer tower about half the height of the classic, so games are shorter and the final crash is quieter. Hasbro has made miniature versions alongside the classic, and the Indian box is made by Funskool for Hasbro India.

What people love

  • Small and light enough for a handbag, a school bag or a holiday suitcase
  • The same simple rules as the full-size game, so anyone who knows Jenga can play at once
  • Quick games on a small table, with no reading and nothing to set up beyond the tower
  • Works as a solo challenge: try to beat your own highest tower

Common complaints

  • The tower starts at about 13 cm, half the height of the classic, so games are shorter and the crash less dramatic
  • No stacking sleeve is listed, so the first tower has to be squared up by hand
  • Hasbro publishes no separate rules or product page for the mini, so buyers rely on the few lines printed on the box
