Great for Peppa Pig fans of about 5 to 7 who are ready for their first money game

Think twice if Your child isn't into Peppa Pig: the classic Monopoly Junior is the same game with a Monopoly Town board

How we rate it

Learning curve. One die, no building, no trading and compulsory buying: a five-year-old can follow it after a round, so it sits with UNO and Connect 4 at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. You must buy whatever free property you land on and there is no trading, so the die decides almost everything. Nobody loses because of a bad decision.

Interaction. You pay rent to each other and cheer when someone lands on your property, but there's no bargaining or trading.

Set-up. The first time, press the 48 Sold signs out of their card sheet. After that, hand out tokens, character cards and Sold signs, deal the notes for the number of players and shuffle the Chance cards.

Reading. Mostly pictures and numbers; each Chance card has a line of English that a grown-up can read out.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Monopoly Junior: Peppa Pig Edition right for you?

Great if

  • Peppa Pig fans of about 5 to 7 who are ready for their first money game
  • Practising counting and adding with small notes
  • A game that ends in under half an hour, before little ones lose interest
  • Grandparents, cousins and older siblings playing with the youngest during school holidays

Skip it if

  • Your child isn't into Peppa Pig: the classic Monopoly Junior is the same game with a Monopoly Town board
  • Your children are 8 or older and ready for full Monopoly or Business
  • There's a toddler at home who puts small pieces in their mouth

How Monopoly Junior: Peppa Pig Edition plays

Set-up: each player picks a token (Peppa, George, Mummy Pig or Daddy Pig), takes the matching 'Who's Your Token?' card and that token's 12 Sold signs, and puts the token on GO. The banker hands out notes by player count: 20 each with two players, 18 each with three and 16 each with four. The Chance cards are shuffled and placed on the board, and the youngest player goes first.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The board is mostly pictures and numbers. The 20 Chance cards and the game guide have short English text that a grown-up can read aloud, so children who can't read yet can still play. We found no Hindi or other Indian-language edition.

The full explanation: how a game of Monopoly Junior: Peppa Pig Edition goes

On your turn, roll the single die and move clockwise. Land on a property nobody owns and you must buy it: pay the bank the amount printed on the space and put one of your Sold signs on it. Land on one someone else owns and you pay them rent, double if they own both properties of that colour. Passing or landing on GO pays you 2.

Chance cards bring surprises. Instead of Jail, this edition has Time Out: you go straight there without collecting anything at GO, and you get out by paying 1, using a Get Out of Time Out Free card, or rolling a 6 within three turns. You can still collect rent while you wait.

The game ends the moment a player can't pay rent, buy a property or pay a Chance card fee. Everyone else counts their cash and the richest player wins; if there's a tie, add the value of your properties to your cash.

Tip: with a five-year-old, let a grown-up be the banker and read the Chance cards aloud. Once the children have the hang of it, try Hasbro's 'advanced game' in the rules, where you can pay a debt by handing over a property instead of going bankrupt straight away.

About the editions

Hasbro's current Peppa Pig Monopoly Junior is item F1656, and our Amazon.in link goes to it. The listing gives India as the country of origin and names Hasbro India as importer, but we found no Hasbro statement or readable box back saying where the box sold in India is made; Hasbro's own rules sheet for F1656 is its American and Australian print.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Hasbro Gaming, Monopoly Junior and Peppa Pig logos, and the listing should name Monopoly or Hasbro as the brand.
  • Check the contents against Hasbro's list for item F1656: gameboard, 4 Junior tokens, 20 Chance cards, 4 'Who's Your Token?' character cards, 48 Sold signs, 90 banknotes, 1 die and a game guide.
  • The tokens should be Peppa, George, Mummy Pig and Daddy Pig, and the board should show places such as Peppa's House, Playgroup and Grandpa Pig's Garden.
  • Peppa-themed money or shopping games from other brands are different products, not Hasbro's Monopoly Junior.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews or forum threads about the Peppa Pig edition, so this rests on Hasbro's own description and rules. On paper it does the same job as the classic Monopoly Junior: it gives children of about 5 to 7 the fun of buying places and collecting rent, with sums small enough to count themselves, in a game that finishes within half an hour. The Peppa board and Pig family tokens are the draw for young fans. The same simplicity is its limit: buying is compulsory and there is no trading, so the die decides the winner and children soon outgrow it.

What people love

  • Peppa's House, Playgroup and the Pig family make it instantly familiar to young fans
  • Short games, usually under half an hour
  • Counting and paying with small notes is good number practice
  • Very few rules: one die, no houses, hotels or mortgages

Common complaints

  • Few real decisions, because you must buy whatever you land on
  • The game can end suddenly when one player runs out of money
  • Children outgrow it once they want to trade and build

Questions people ask about Monopoly Junior: Peppa Pig Edition

What is the difference between Monopoly Junior and the Peppa Pig edition?

They play almost the same way and have the same number of cards, Sold signs and notes. The Peppa Pig edition has a board of places from the show, Pig family tokens, a Time Out space instead of Jail, and a tie-break that adds property values to cash.

What age is Monopoly Junior Peppa Pig for?

Hasbro says 5 and up, for 2 to 4 players. Children need to count spaces and add small amounts, so a grown-up acting as banker works well at first.

How much money do you start with in Monopoly Junior Peppa Pig?

It depends on how many are playing: 20 each with two players, 18 each with three and 16 each with four. You collect 2 every time you pass or land on GO.

How do you win Monopoly Junior Peppa Pig?

The game stops as soon as one player can't pay rent, buy a property or pay a Chance card fee. Everyone else counts their cash and the richest player wins; in a tie, players add the value of their properties to their cash.

Is the Peppa Pig Monopoly Junior made in India?

The listing our link goes to gives India as the country of origin and names Hasbro India as importer, but we could not confirm this from Hasbro or from the box itself. Hasbro's online rules sheet for this game is its American and Australian print.
