Great for Families who like Monopoly but not the knock-out ending, since nobody goes bankrupt

Think twice if You want classic Monopoly's houses, hotels and property empires; here you race to complete travel goals

How we rate it

Learning curve. The roll-buy-pay loop is classic Monopoly, minus houses, hotels and mortgages. Travel goals, flights and permanent journal stamps add a few new rules, which puts it at 2 on our scale.

Luck & skill. Reaching a travel goal often needs an exact roll, so the dice decide a lot. Choosing which destinations to buy, when to pay for a flight and when to use the golden ticket gives some control.

Interaction. You pay each other tour fees, bid in auctions and can trade Destination cards, but mostly you race separately towards your own travel goals.

Set-up. The first time, punch out the cardboard money. Then choose a banker, count out 1,500 for each player, shuffle the two card decks, wipe the board and put the golden ticket on Free Parking.

Reading. Chance and Travel Journal cards have short English instructions, and Destination cards have travel facts on the back that are fun to read aloud.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

The full explanation: how a game of Monopoly Travel World Tour goes

On your turn you roll two dice and move. Land on an unowned destination and you must buy it or put it up for auction. Each Destination card names a travel goal: another place on the board you need to reach. Land on a destination someone else owns and you pay them a tour fee, which doubles if they own the whole colour group, unless that place is one of your own travel goals.

When you reach one of your travel goals, by an exact roll, a card or a flight, you press your token on that space to stamp it, and only one player can stamp each destination in a game. Flights help: a Local Flight costs 100 and takes you to any destination before the next flight space, and a Long-Distance Flight costs 200 and takes you anywhere on the board. The first player to land on Free Parking takes the golden ticket for one free trip.

The first player to stamp four travel goals wins straight away. Travel Journal cards replace Community Chest: when you draw one you may stamp it, and those stamps stay on the card for good, paying out or costing money in later games. Nobody goes bankrupt; if you can't pay, you pay what you can.

Tip: only the gameboard wipes clean, so read the rules before anyone stamps a Destination card by mistake. Keep the small money tokens in a bag between games so none go missing.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

Hasbro sells Travel World Tour (item F4007) in English-speaking markets, and we found no separate Indian version. Hasbro's US, UK and Australian pages list it, though its Indian instructions site doesn't. Our Amazon.in link goes to the F4007 pack from the Hasbro Gaming brand store. Hasbro doesn't say where it is made, so we haven't marked it as made in India.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Monopoly and Hasbro Gaming logos and the name Travel World Tour; Hasbro's item number is F4007.
  • The four tokens are self-inking stamps (a Scottie dog, a T-Rex, a cat and a rubber duck), and the gameboard has a dry-erase finish.
  • Inside you should find 22 Destination cards, 10 Chance cards, 10 Travel Journal cards, two dice and cardboard money tokens instead of paper notes.
  • There are no houses or hotels in this edition; a box that includes them is a different Monopoly.

What reviewers and players say

Reviewers enjoy Travel World Tour as a lighter, friendlier Monopoly. They like the self-inking token stamps, the travel facts on the cards and the permanent Travel Journal stamps that make each family's set a little different, and they find turns move faster than in the classic game. Nobody goes bankrupt, which suits mixed ages, and an Indian reviewer thought younger players would enjoy learning about tourist spots while stamping. The common complaint is the money: small cardboard tokens that are fiddly to pick up and easy to lose.

What people love

  • Stamping travel goals with the tokens, which children especially enjoy
  • Travel facts on the cards introduce lesser-known places around the world
  • No bankruptcy, so nobody sits out
  • Travel Journal stamps carry over, so the game changes the more you play

Common complaints

  • The cardboard money tokens are tiny, fiddly and easy to lose
  • A stamp on a card is permanent, so stamping the wrong card by mistake can't be undone
  • Fans of houses and hotels may miss building up properties at first

Questions people ask about Monopoly Travel World Tour

Is Monopoly Travel World Tour a travel-size Monopoly?

No. It is a full-size board game themed on world travel, not a small set for journeys. You buy destinations instead of streets and win by stamping four travel goals; Hasbro's portable Monopoly games are separate products.

How do you win Monopoly Travel World Tour?

Every destination you buy comes with a travel goal, another place on the board. When you reach one, you stamp it with your token, and the first player to stamp four travel goals wins at once. Nobody goes bankrupt along the way.

Does the stamp ink come off?

Stamps on the dry-erase gameboard wipe off between games. Stamps on cards are meant to be permanent, and Hasbro's rules warn that the ink can stain clothes and furniture, so keep an eye on younger players.

Are there Indian places on the Monopoly Travel World Tour board?

An Indian reviewer counted one, the ruins of Hampi in Karnataka, among destinations from around the world such as Chichen Itza, Rapa Nui and the Grand Canyon. The board doesn't use Indian cities like the Business games sold here.

How long does a game take?

Hasbro doesn't print a playing time. A rules site estimates about an hour, and reviewers found turns quicker than in classic Monopoly, because the game stops as soon as someone stamps four goals.
