Great for Families who play Wordle on their phones and want to race each other at the table

Think twice if You have more than four players: there are only three guessing boards

How we rate it

Learning curve. If you have played Wordle on a phone, you know it already; the only new rules are the Word Master role and racing to five cards. It sits with UNO and Connect 4 on our scale.

Luck & skill. Deduction decides most rounds. University Games mentions 'a bit of luck': a lucky early guess can crack a word quickly, and the card drawn sets how hard the word is.

Interaction. Guessers race each other but never touch each other's boards; the Word Master checks every guess and decides ties.

Set-up. Shuffle the word cards, put out the chips, and hand a board and marker to each guesser.

Reading. All play is in English five-letter words, and the Word Master has to check every letter of every guess.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is 5-Letter Wordlet right for you?

Great if

  • Families who play Wordle on their phones and want to race each other at the table
  • Children from 8 and their parents or grandparents, since the word comes from a card
  • Short rounds at get-togethers, with as many words as you like rather than one a day
  • Building vocabulary while working out which letters fit

Skip it if

  • You have more than four players: there are only three guessing boards
  • Some players aren't comfortable with English spelling
  • You want the official Wordle game; that is Hasbro's Wordle: The Party Game

How 5-Letter Wordlet plays

Set-up: shuffle the 200 secret word cards and put them face down with the green and blue answer chips beside them. The youngest player starts as Word Master and draws the top card: that is the secret word for the round. Everyone else is a guesser, takes a guessing board and a dry-erase marker, and writes their name at the top.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Everything is in English five-letter words: guessers need a good range of words and the Word Master must spell confidently to check guesses. No Hindi or other Indian-language edition was found, and the instruction sheet is in English. The printed word cards mean nobody has to think up a secret word.

The full explanation: how a game of 5-Letter Wordlet goes

All the guessers write a five-letter word on the first line of their board at the same time, keeping it hidden from each other, and hand their boards to the Word Master. The Word Master puts a green chip under each letter that is in the right place, a blue chip under each letter that is in the word but in the wrong place, and nothing under letters that aren't in the word.

Guessers study the chips, write their next guess on the next line and hand the board straight back, so everyone is racing. The box challenges you to get there in six guesses or less. The first guesser to write the secret word wins its card; if every board fills up without the answer, the Word Master keeps the card, and in a tie the Word Master decides.

Then the next player clockwise becomes Word Master and a new card is drawn. The first player to collect five secret word cards wins the game.

A tip: open with a word that tests common letters, then use every chip, including the empty spaces, to rule letters out. With two players, one hosts and one guesses, so swap roles each round; with three boards, the game takes up to four players.

Buy Funskool's box. It is University Games' 5-Letter Wordlet made in India by Funskool, with the same contents as the US and UK box. Our Amazon.in link goes to the Funskool edition. If you want the official Wordle game instead, that is Hasbro's Wordle: The Party Game, a different game for older players.

Before you choose

  • The box should show the University Games logo and the title '5-Letter Wordlet: A Confounding Word Strategy Game'
  • The listing should name Funskool, whose item code for this box is 4312600
  • Inside you should find 200 secret word cards, 90 green and blue chips, 3 dry-erase boards and 3 markers

What reviewers and players say

No player reviews or forum threads about 5-Letter Wordlet could be found, so this rests on University Games' own description and trade-press launch reports. University Games launched it in 2022 to bring the solo phone puzzle to the family table, and its pitch is that, unlike the daily online puzzle, you can play as many words as you like. The printed word cards mean nobody has to think up a secret word, which helps younger players, and racing to solve first adds pressure the phone version doesn't have. With three boards, it tops out at four players.

What people love

  • Familiar Wordle-style clues that are quick to learn
  • 200 printed word cards, so there's no need to invent secret words
  • As many puzzles as you like, not one a day
  • Racing to solve first makes it competitive

Common complaints

  • Only three guessing boards, so no more than four players
  • The Word Master does all the checking and sits out of the guessing that round

Questions people ask about 5-Letter Wordlet

Is 5-Letter Wordlet the same as Wordle?

It uses the same idea as the online Wordle puzzle: guess a five-letter word, with colours telling you which letters are in the right or wrong place. But it is University Games' own board game, not an official Wordle product: its box and rules carry University Games' trademark and don't mention The New York Times.

What is the difference between 5-Letter Wordlet and Wordle: The Party Game?

Hasbro's Wordle: The Party Game is the official one, licensed from The New York Times, for ages 14 and up: the host writes their own word and players score by how many tries they need, with the lowest total winning. In 5-Letter Wordlet, for ages 8 and up, the word comes from one of 200 cards, guessers race to solve it first, and the first to win five words wins.

How many guesses do you get in 5-Letter Wordlet?

The box challenges you to find the word in six guesses or less, writing each guess on a new line of your board. If every board fills up and nobody has the word, the Word Master keeps the card.

How many players can play 5-Letter Wordlet?

Two to four: one Word Master and up to three guessers, since the box has three guessing boards. With two players, one hosts and one guesses, and you swap each round.

Is Funskool 5-Letter Wordlet made in India?

Yes. Funskool makes the Indian edition: the instruction sheet for this box on Funskool's website says 'Made in India', and Funskool's product page gives India as the country of origin.
