The quick verdict

Great for Quiz lovers who miss college or office quiz nights

Think twice if You want questions about India, Bollywood or cricket: these are international and lean Western

How we rate it

Learning curve. The rules are simple, but the host has to mark ten different question types and keep the score, and the questions themselves are hard.

Luck & skill. Knowledge decides it. Luck only comes in which cards are drawn and whether your team happens to know that category well.

Interaction. Teams talk among themselves and race to hand in first, but there is no direct play against the other teams.

Set-up. Choose a host, split into teams, give each team an answer sheet and a pencil, and shuffle the cards.

Reading. The host reads every question aloud, and teams write all their answers.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Ultimate Pub Trivia right for you?

Great if

  • Quiz lovers who miss college or office quiz nights
  • Parties and get-togethers of 6 to 16 people split into teams
  • Mixed groups, since each person can carry the category they know best
  • Anyone who enjoys playing quizmaster

Skip it if

  • You want questions about India, Bollywood or cricket: these are international and lean Western
  • You usually play with only two or three people
  • Your group is mostly younger children; Funskool says 12 and up

How Ultimate Pub Trivia plays

Pick a host to read the questions, mark the answers and keep score. If nobody wants the job for the whole game, teams take turns hosting a round, and that round's host can't help their own team. Split into two or more teams of two to eight people; each team picks a name and a scribe who writes its answers.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The host reads every question aloud and each team writes its answers, so everyone needs good English. The questions are general knowledge with an international, Western lean, and no Hindi or Indian-themed edition was found.

The full explanation: how a game of Ultimate Pub Trivia goes

The host decides the order of the five categories (Funskool's rules call them We're Booked, Pop Culture, Athletic Feats, Geek Chic, and Past, Present & Future), draws a card and reads its ten questions aloud, leaving time to write. The answers are on the back of the card, so keep it out of sight. After the last question teams get two more minutes, and the first team to hand in its sheet earns a bonus point.

Every card has the same mix: five short-answer questions worth up to 2 points each, a 'name four' question, a 'who said it?' quote, a 'what decade?' question with extra points for the exact year, a question whose answer is a number, and a drawing question worth up to 5 points. That makes 30 points a round plus the bonus, and the host may give part marks.

After five rounds the team with the highest total wins. If teams tie, the host reads single questions from a new card, and any team that gets one wrong drops out until only one is left.

Let teams play to their strengths: the reader takes the book questions and the cricket fan takes Athletic Feats. A game uses five of the 100 cards, so the questions last a good while, but each team fills an answer sheet every round, so keep plain paper handy for when the pad runs out.

What reviewers and players say

Few independent reviews of Ultimate Pub Trivia could be found, and no forum discussion, so this rests on the makers' descriptions and the rules. University Games pitches it as the weekly pub quiz brought home, with crowd-sourced questions and teams where every player can shine in a favourite category. The fixed mix on each card, a quote, a year, a number and a drawing among the short answers, keeps rounds varied, and one host can run it for a large group. For Indian groups the catch is the question set: the sample cards in Funskool's photos are international and Western-leaning, so families who want Bollywood or cricket questions will be happier with an Indian quiz game.

What people love

  • It feels like a real quiz night, with a host, team names and a scoreboard
  • Ten kinds of question on every card, including a drawing question
  • Works for big groups, with up to eight people in a team
  • Teams can lean on whoever knows books, sport or pop culture best

Common complaints

  • The questions are international and lean Western, not Indian
  • Someone has to host and mark, which keeps them out of the play unless teams take turns
  • The pad of answer sheets runs out long before the questions do

Questions people ask about Ultimate Pub Trivia

How do you play Ultimate Pub Trivia?

A host reads a card of ten questions, each team writes its answers on an answer sheet, and the host marks them. There are five rounds, one for each category, and the team with the most points after five rounds wins.

How many players do you need for Ultimate Pub Trivia?

At least four, as two teams of two. Teams can have up to eight people and you can have more than two teams, so it works for big groups. A host reads the questions; if nobody wants to host all game, teams take turns.

Are the questions in Ultimate Pub Trivia about India?

Mostly not. The sample cards in Funskool's photos ask about Romeo and Juliet, the Narnia books, Dan Brown and the Brontë sisters, so expect international, Western-leaning general knowledge. For Hindi-film questions, Bollywood Battle is a better fit.

What do you do when the answer sheets run out?

Use plain paper. Each team uses a sheet every round, so the 100 answer sheets run out well before the 1,000 questions. Number the lines one to ten and leave space for the drawing question.

Who makes Ultimate Pub Trivia?

University Games, a games company based in San Francisco, owns the game. Funskool makes the Indian edition, and its box is printed 'Made in India'.
