Great for Families where parents and teenagers already compare their daily Wordle scores

Think twice if Some players aren't comfortable spelling in English and would feel left behind

How we rate it

Learning curve. If you have played Wordle on your phone, the only new things are hosting and scoring. The rules are as easy to learn as UNO or Connect 4, though the host must check each guess carefully.

Luck & skill. A lucky first guess can help, but a good vocabulary and careful elimination decide most rounds.

Interaction. Each guesser works alone behind a shield. The only shared moments are the host announcing tile counts and who has solved it, which adds a little race pressure.

Set-up. Hand out a board, marker and shield to each guesser, give the host the Secret Word board and tiles, and write the players' names in the scoring table.

Reading. There are no cards to read, but the whole game is reading and spelling English words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Wordle: The Party Game right for you?

Great if

  • Families where parents and teenagers already compare their daily Wordle scores
  • Cousins and friends who want a calm word game after dinner, not a noisy party game
  • Setting your own secret words: an easy one for a younger cousin, a tricky double-letter one for the Wordle expert
  • A gift for a Wordle fan who wants more than one puzzle a day

Skip it if

  • Some players aren't comfortable spelling in English and would feel left behind
  • You want lots of chatter and table talk; everyone works quietly behind a shield
  • You usually have more than four people and don't want to play in teams

How Wordle: The Party Game plays

Set-up: one player is the Wordle Host for the round. The host takes the Secret Word board and writes everyone's name in its scoring table. Every other player takes a Wordle board, a dry-wipe marker and a shield to hide their board. Keep a cloth or tissue handy for wiping.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Everything is in English: the host picks a five-letter English word and everyone else guesses with English words, so a bigger vocabulary helps a lot. No Hindi or other Indian-language edition exists. The rules leaflet has a list of suggested secret words, which helps a host who freezes.

The full explanation: how a game of Wordle: The Party Game goes

The host secretly writes a five-letter word on the Secret Word board and turns it over. It must be a dictionary word; Hasbro's rules don't allow plurals, names, words from other languages, abbreviations or hyphenated words as the secret word. The leaflet includes a list of suggested words if the host gets stuck.

Each guesser writes a five-letter word in the top row of their grid. The host checks it letter by letter and places a green tile on each letter in the right place and a yellow tile on each letter that is in the word but in the wrong place. The host also says aloud how many green and yellow tiles each player got, without saying which letters. Guessers cross off letters they have ruled out and keep going for up to six tries.

When everyone has solved the word or used six tries, the host reveals it. A guesser scores one point per try needed, or seven points if they didn't solve it; the host scores nothing that round. The game lasts as many rounds as there are players, so everyone hosts once, and the lowest total wins.

Hasbro gives three other ways to play. In timed mode the host gives 60 or 90 seconds per guess. In fast mode the round ends as soon as someone solves the word, that player scores a point and the highest total wins. In team mode, for more than four people, teams guess together and take turns as host.

About the editions

Hasbro has no separate Indian edition of Wordle: The Party Game; there is one English box worldwide, item F8348. Our Amazon.in link goes to that box, sold through Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in, whose listing names Hasbro India as the importer. Hasbro doesn't say where the box is made, so we don't call it made in India.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Hasbro logo, The New York Times Games logo and the name 'Wordle The Party Game'. Hasbro's item number is F8348.
  • Check the contents against Hasbro's list: 3 Wordle boards, 3 shields, 1 Secret Word board with a scoring table, 3 dry-wipe markers, 45 green tiles and 45 yellow tiles.
  • Hasbro's rules leaflet states that Wordle is a trademark of The New York Times Company, used under licence, and ends with a list of suggested secret words.
  • Word-guessing games from other makers sold under their own names are different games, not Hasbro's. A listing that puts 'Wordle' in its title but names another brand, or none, is not this game.

What reviewers and players say

There are few hands-on reviews of Wordle: The Party Game. TTPM's review page likes how it brings the phone puzzle to the table, makes it competitive and social, and gives Wordle fans more than one puzzle a day. Before release, TechRadar worried that it would feel solitary, with each guesser working alone, slow guessers keeping others waiting and small tiles to handle, while a game designer quoted by NPR was cautiously hopeful because Wordle's rules are so simple. The general view is that it suits groups who already love Wordle rather than people looking for a lively party game.

What people love

  • It is the same Wordle puzzle people already know, so there is almost nothing to teach
  • Reusable dry-wipe boards mean as many rounds as you like, not one puzzle a day
  • Taking turns as host lets everyone set a word for the others
  • Timed, fast and team modes give some variety

Common complaints

  • Guessers work alone behind shields, so there is little interaction
  • Slow guessers can keep everyone waiting, and the host must place a lot of small tiles
  • Only three guessing boards, so groups of more than four have to play in teams

Questions people ask about Wordle: The Party Game

Is Wordle: The Party Game the same as the online Wordle?

The puzzle is the same: six tries to find a five-letter word, with green for the right letter in the right place and yellow for a right letter in the wrong place. The difference is that one player hosts and chooses the word, and the others compete to solve it in the fewest tries. Everyone takes a turn as host, and the lowest total score wins.

What age is the Wordle board game for?

Hasbro rates it for ages 14 and up, although some listings say 12 and up. The rules are simple; what matters is a good English vocabulary and spelling, especially for the host, who has to mark every guess correctly. Younger players who already enjoy Wordle can join in by teaming up with an adult.

Can more than four people play Wordle: The Party Game?

The box has three guessing boards, so it is made for 2 to 4 players. For bigger groups, Hasbro's team mode lets two or more people share a board and take turns as host, which works well for a family get-together.

Can two people play the Wordle board game?

Yes. With two, one hosts and the other guesses, then you swap, so it is a two-round contest of who solves the other's word in fewer tries. It is livelier with three or four, when the guessers race each other.

What else do you need to play?

Only a cloth or tissue to wipe the boards between rounds, and a dictionary if you want to settle arguments about words. Hasbro's rules let the host challenge any guess that isn't in the dictionary you have agreed on.
