The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Children of about 4 to 7 who are ready for their first game with rules

Think twice if Your child is 8 or older and wants more of a challenge

How we rate it

Learning curve. Look, remember, pick up: a four-year-old can follow it after one round, so it sits with UNO at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. Which scene card comes up is luck, but a sharp memory and quick hands decide almost every round.

Interaction. Players mostly take turns testing their own memory; the fun is in cheering and checking each other's picks.

Set-up. Spread the shoe pieces face up, shuffle the scene cards into a pile and keep the scoreboard and marker handy.

Reading. The cards and pieces are pictures; an adult reads the rules and may keep the score at first.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Caterpillar Clutter right for you?

Great if

  • Children of about 4 to 7 who are ready for their first game with rules
  • Practising attention and visual memory, and new words as you name what is in each scene
  • Short rounds with a parent or grandparent, or a child playing alone to beat a score
  • Trips and birthday return gifts: the box is small and light

Skip it if

  • Your child is 8 or older and wants more of a challenge
  • You want a game the whole family will play for an hour
  • You need a game for more than four players

How Caterpillar Clutter plays

Spread the 20 double-sided shoe pieces face up on the table and shuffle the 20 scene cards. Each card shows a cluttered picture with some of Catty the caterpillar's shoes in it; ten cards are in full colour and ten show the objects as shadows.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The scene cards and shoe pieces are pictures, so nobody reads during play. Only the rules are in English, and naming the things in each scene works in Hindi, Tamil or any language the family speaks.

The full explanation: how a game of Caterpillar Clutter goes

In the memory game, turn over a scene card and look hard at the shoes in the picture. Then turn the card face down and quickly pick up the shoe pieces you remember. Check against the card, and you score for every shoe you remembered; keep the scores on the wipe-clean scoreboard, and the highest score wins.

There are other ways to play: use the coloured side of the shoe pieces or the shadow side, play a shadow-matching game, or, for the youngest children, simply match shoes. The maker also suggests using the scene cards to build vocabulary: ask children to name everything they can see.

For parents: a four-year-old will need an adult to run the game and check the answers at first, but most children can play on their own after a few rounds. For a shorter game, play five or ten scene cards. A child can also play alone and try to beat yesterday's score.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

Caterpillar Clutter is designed and sold by Chalk and Chuckles, an Indian company with its registered office in New Delhi and its own factory in Kundli, Haryana, so there is no imported version to look for. Our Amazon.in link goes to an older listing for the game in the maker's brand store, sold by another seller rather than by Chalk and Chuckles. The listing's details differ a little from the maker's current box (ages 4 to 9 instead of 4 to 8, and only cards named as contents), so the box it sends may be an older print: check its photos for the shoe pieces and the scoreboard.

Before you choose

  • The box and listing should name Chalk and Chuckles (sometimes written Chalk & Chuckles); the listing title spells the game 'Catterpillar Clutter'
  • The box front says 'A speedy game of memory', ages 4 to 8 and 1 to 4 players
  • Contents: 20 double-sided shoe pieces, 20 scene cards, a wipe-clean scoreboard, a wipe-clean marker and instructions
  • The maker's item code is CCPPL039 and the barcode is 8906045560399

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, parent blogs, forum threads or award pages for Caterpillar Clutter, although it has been sold in India for years. So this page rests on Chalk and Chuckles' own product page, pictures and short video. On paper it is a gentle first memory game for four- to seven-year-olds, with a funny story, short rounds and several ways to play. Older children may find it too easy, and the online rules are brief.

What people love

  • A simple first memory game with a funny story about a caterpillar's lost shoes
  • No reading needed, so children can play with grandparents in any language
  • Several ways to play, from matching for the youngest to a memory race
  • Small, light box for trips and return gifts

Common complaints

  • Children of 8 and up may find it too easy
  • The rules online are brief, so keep the printed instructions
  • The listing we link is older and names only cards, so check the photos before you order

Questions people ask about Caterpillar Clutter

What age is Caterpillar Clutter for?

The box says 4 to 8 years; the maker's description also calls it a gift for ages 3 and up, and the listing behind our Amazon.in link says 4 to 9. Children of about 4 to 7 get the most from it. The box pictured on that listing carries a choking-hazard warning for small parts, so keep the pieces away from children under 3.

Can one child play Caterpillar Clutter alone?

Yes. The box says 1 to 4 players, and the maker says it can be played alone: a child studies a scene, picks the shoes and tries to beat their own score. It is livelier with two or three players.

Is Caterpillar Clutter just a card game?

Not quite. It has 20 scene cards, but you also need the 20 shoe pieces, the wipe-clean scoreboard and the marker that come in the box. The listing behind our Amazon.in link names only cards, so check that its photos show the shoe pieces too.

Is the Caterpillar Clutter sold on Amazon.in the current box?

Our Amazon.in link goes to an older listing sold by another seller, not by Chalk and Chuckles. Its main picture shows the same box design as the maker's, with a choking-hazard warning added, but its age range (4 to 9) and short contents line differ from the maker's current box (4 to 8, with shoe pieces and a scoreboard), so the box may be an older print of the same game.

Is Caterpillar Clutter made in India?

Chalk and Chuckles is an Indian company with its own factory in Kundli, Haryana, but neither its page for this game nor the listing behind our Amazon.in link says where the box is made, so we don't mark it made in India.
