Great for Children of about 8 to 12 learning about India's places and famous people at school

Think twice if Your children are under 8; acting out famous Indians needs some general knowledge

How we rate it

Learning curve. Spin, draw, act or describe: the rules fit in a minute, so it sits at 1 on our scale. Knowing enough about India to act out a famous person is the real test.

Luck & skill. Which colour comes up and which stick you pull are luck. Knowing India, and acting or describing well, decides who collects five sticks first.

Interaction. One player performs or describes and everyone else shouts out guesses, every turn.

Set-up. Nothing to lay out: open the tube, hand round the spinner and start.

Reading. The player holding the stick reads it, including any forbidden words; the guessers don't read.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Smart Sticks Discover India right for you?

Great if

  • Children of about 8 to 12 learning about India's places and famous people at school
  • Get-togethers where grandparents, parents and cousins each know a different side of India
  • Families living abroad who want children to pick up India's geography and heroes through play
  • Train and car journeys: one small tube with nothing to set up

Skip it if

  • Your children are under 8; acting out famous Indians needs some general knowledge
  • You want world geography; Countries of the World is the tube for that
  • You need a game for a big group; the maker suggests up to 4 players

How Smart Sticks Discover India plays

Discover India comes in the same Smart Sticks tube as the rest of the range: 60 sticks and a spinner. The front of each stick is a challenge about India, and the backs fit together into a map of India of about 54 x 28.5 cm, so the game doubles as a puzzle once the guessing is over.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The sticks are read aloud by the player whose turn it is, and the maker's material is all in English. Because the topics are Indian (famous people, places, dances and monuments), families can happily guess and explain in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali or any mix; only the reader needs to follow the English on the stick.

The full explanation: how a game of Smart Sticks Discover India goes

Spin the spinner, take a stick of the colour it lands on, and get the others to guess what is on it. Charades sticks name a famous Indian to act out, from scientists and musicians to artists and sports stars. Odd One Out sticks give a list of words that all belong together except one. Don't Say It sticks name a place in India that you have to describe without using the forbidden words printed on the stick.

Each correct guess wins the stick, and the first player to five sticks wins. Chalk and Chuckles counts more than 100 facts about India across the sticks, and lists capital cities, animals, sports, dances, monuments, rivers and mountains among the topics.

How it differs from Countries of the World: the tube, spinner and rules are the same, but every stick is about India, the charades are about people rather than sports and dances, and the maker rates it 8 and up instead of 7. Miming a famous person is harder than miming a sport, so let younger players act with a partner or give one spoken hint.

About the editions

Discover India is designed for Indian families by Chalk and Chuckles, a New Delhi games company that lists its factory in Kundli, Haryana, and it is sold in the maker's own tube. There is no imported version. Our Amazon.in link goes to the maker's standard tube, item CCPPL063.

Before you choose

  • The tube and listing should name Chalk and Chuckles (often written Chalk & Chuckles), Smart Sticks and Discover India
  • Inside: one tube with a spinner and 60 sticks whose backs make a map of India
  • The maker's item code is CCPPL063 and its barcode is 8906045560634
  • The tube is about 8 x 8 x 15 cm
  • Check it says Discover India, not Countries of the World, which comes in a similar tube

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, blog posts, forum threads or videos about Smart Sticks Discover India, and Chalk and Chuckles has no video for this tube either, so this page rests on the maker's product page. On paper it is the Countries of the World game turned towards India, with famous Indians to act out, places to describe and an India map on the back of the sticks. It looks a natural pick for curious 8 to 12-year-olds and for mixed-age family evenings, but we can't yet say how varied the 60 sticks are.

What people love

  • All the topics are Indian, so grandparents and parents can join in with what they know
  • Acting out famous Indians brings scientists, musicians and sports stars into a family evening
  • The sticks turn over into a map of India, a quiet second activity for one child
  • A small tube that travels well

Common complaints

  • Miming a famous person is hard for younger children without hints
  • With 60 sticks, regular players will soon know many of the answers
  • No how-to-play video, and the written rules are short, so expect to settle a few house rules

The maker says 8 to 99 years. Children of about 8 to 12 get the most from it; a 7-year-old can join in if an adult helps with the reading and the famous names.
