The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Train journeys, long car rides and waiting rooms, where a big upright grid would be awkward

Think twice if You only play at home and already own the full-size Strike 4 or Connect 4: the game is the same

How we rate it

Learning curve. One rule: get four in a row. Like Strike 4 and Connect 4, it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO and Jenga.

Luck & skill. No dice and no cards: every drop is a choice, so the player who looks a move or two ahead wins.

Interaction. Every disc either builds your own line or blocks your opponent's, so both players watch each other's moves all game.

Set-up. The first time, an adult assembles the unit, which takes a few minutes. After that, open it up, share out the discs and start.

Reading. Nothing to read during play; only the instructions have words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Travel Strike 4 right for you?

Great if

  • Train journeys, long car rides and waiting rooms, where a big upright grid would be awkward
  • A child from 6 and a parent, grandparent or older cousin who want a quick thinking game
  • A small return gift or birthday present for a child who already enjoys four-in-a-row
  • Families collecting Funskool's travel games: its box back shows the range's Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Chess and Draughts sets

Skip it if

  • You only play at home and already own the full-size Strike 4 or Connect 4: the game is the same
  • You need a game for three or more; this one is strictly for two
  • A toddler shares the house: the discs are small, so keep them packed away

How Travel Strike 4 plays

Set-up: the first time, an adult puts the unit together; the box back says 'Adult Assembly Required'. Funskool doesn't publish the travel set's instructions online, so follow the sheet in the box. Then each player takes one colour, 22 red or 22 yellow discs.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Nothing to read during play: you drop discs and watch for four in a row, so one sentence of explanation in any home language is enough. Only the instructions in the box are in English.

The full explanation: how a game of Travel Strike 4 goes

A turn: take turns dropping one of your discs into any slot at the top of the grid. As in every disc-dropping game, it falls to the lowest empty space in that column, so the grid fills from the bottom up.

Winning: the first player to get four discs of their colour in a line, across, up and down or diagonally, wins. Funskool's sheet for its full-size Strike 4 says the player who started one game goes second in the next, which keeps a series fair. That sheet doesn't say what happens if the grid fills with no line of four; most families call it a draw and play again.

How it differs from our Strike 4 page: that page covers Funskool's full-size Strike 4 New and Improved (item 9774700), an upright grid for the table at home. Travel Strike 4 (product code 9632500) plays the same game in a much smaller unit, boxed at about 19.5 x 11 cm and 0.2 kg, with 22 discs of each colour; Funskool's older full-size sheet lists 21 of each. Funskool doesn't give the travel grid's number of rows and columns, so we can't say whether it has the usual 42 spaces.

Tip: before every drop, look for three of your opponent's discs in a line with an open space, and block it. The middle column is part of the most possible lines, and setting up two threats at once wins games, because only one can be blocked. On a long journey, play best of five and swap who starts.

From the listing details Claude read (one compact game unit to be assembled, 22 red discs, 22 yellow discs, instructions) and the 2024 box back, which says 'Adult Assembly Required' and 'Net Quantity: 1U'. Funskool has no web page listing the travel set's contents. Funskool's older full-size Strike 4 sheet lists one unit (tray and grid) and 21 tokens of each colour.

About the editions

Travel Strike 4 is Funskool's own game, made in India: the 2024 box back reads 'Country of Origin: Made in India' and names Funskool (India) Ltd's factory in Goa. Hasbro's Connect 4 Grab and Go is a different travel four-in-a-row game with its own page here. Our Amazon.in link goes to Funskool's Travel Strike 4, product code 9632500.

Before you choose

  • The box should name Funskool and 'Travel Strike 4', with the line 'Challenge your friend to a game of disc dropping fun!'
  • The box back should show 'Product Code: 9632500', 'Country of Origin: Made in India' and Funskool's Goa factory address
  • Inside you should find one compact unit to assemble, 22 red discs, 22 yellow discs and instructions
  • Unbranded pocket four-in-a-row sets are different products, even when the listing borrows the Strike 4 or Connect 4 name

What reviewers and players say

We found no reviews of Funskool's Travel Strike 4, so this rests on what reviewers say about the four-in-a-row game it shares with Strike 4 and Connect 4. It is about as simple as a real strategy game gets: one rule, a few minutes a game, and a six-year-old can play properly against a parent. Child-development reviewers like that it builds planning, pattern-spotting and concentration. The catches are that only two can play, the first player has an edge with perfect play, so swap who starts, and on a travel set the small discs need packing away carefully.

What people love

  • One rule to learn, so children and grandparents can play together in minutes
  • Quick games that fit a short train stop or a wait at the doctor's
  • Builds planning ahead and spotting patterns
  • A small, light unit from Funskool's travel range that fits in a bag

Common complaints

  • Strictly two players
  • With perfect play the first player can always win, so take turns starting
  • Small travel discs are easy to drop and lose on the move

Questions people ask about Travel Strike 4

What is the difference between Travel Strike 4 and Strike 4?

It is the same four-in-a-row game. Travel Strike 4 is a much smaller unit from Funskool's 'On The Go' travel range, boxed at about 19.5 x 11 cm and 0.2 kg, with 22 discs of each colour; an adult assembles it the first time. The full-size Strike 4 is a bigger upright grid meant for home.

Is Travel Strike 4 the same as Connect 4 Grab and Go?

No. Both are travel four-in-a-row games for two, but Travel Strike 4 is Funskool's own game, made in India, while Connect 4 Grab and Go is Hasbro's unit with 21 discs of each colour stored in lidded side columns. The rules are the same.

How many discs come with Travel Strike 4?

22 red and 22 yellow, according to the listing details, along with the game unit and instructions. Put them back in the box after every game, because small discs roll away easily on a train.

What age is Travel Strike 4 for?

The listing says 6 and up, and one Indian store says 5 and up. Children of that age can learn to spot and block three in a row, and the small discs should be kept away from toddlers.

Is Funskool's Travel Strike 4 made in India?

Yes. The 2024 box back reads 'Country of Origin: Made in India' and names Funskool (India) Ltd's factory in Goa as the maker, with Funskool in Chennai as the marketer.
