The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Train and bus journeys, flights and long car rides, where a big grid and loose discs would be a nuisance

Think twice if You only play at home and already have the full-size Connect 4: the rules are identical, and the big grid is easier for a few people to watch

How we rate it

Learning curve. One rule: get four in a row. Like the full-size game, it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO and Jenga.

Luck & skill. No dice and no cards. Every drop is a choice, so the player who looks a move or two further ahead wins.

Interaction. Every disc either builds your own line or blocks your opponent's, so both players watch each other's moves all game.

Set-up. The first time, an adult clips the two trays onto the grid, which takes a couple of minutes. After that, fold out the trays, drop the discs into the side columns and start.

Reading. Nothing to read during play; only the rules leaflet has words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Connect 4 Grab and Go right for you?

Great if

  • Train and bus journeys, flights and long car rides, where a big grid and loose discs would be a nuisance
  • A child from 6 and a parent or grandparent who want a quick thinking game with nothing to read
  • A small birthday or return gift for any child who already likes Connect 4
  • Homes short on cupboard space: once it's shut, the discs are stored inside the unit

Skip it if

  • You only play at home and already have the full-size Connect 4: the rules are identical, and the big grid is easier for a few people to watch
  • You need a game for three or more; this one is strictly for two
  • A toddler shares the house: Hasbro warns that the small discs are a choking hazard for children under 3

How Connect 4 Grab and Go plays

Set-up: before the very first game, an adult clips the two trays onto the grid; each tray has two small nubs that push into indents near the foot of a side column. After that, fold the trays out, check that the slider tab sits in the middle of the grid, open the lids at the top of the two side columns and drop the discs in, red on one side and yellow on the other. Each player takes a colour.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Nothing to read while you play: you drop discs and watch for four in a row. One sentence of explanation in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali or any home language is enough; only the small rules leaflet is printed in English.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Drop

Take one disc of your colour and drop it into any slot at the top of the grid. It falls to the lowest empty space.

  2. 2
    Block

Before you drop, check your opponent's discs. If they have three in a line with a space they can reach, fill that space first.

  3. 3
    Win

The first player with four of their colour in a row, across, up and down or diagonally, wins. Push the slider aside to empty the grid and play again.

The full explanation: how a game of Connect 4 Grab and Go goes

A turn: Hasbro's 2023 rules let the youngest player start, then you take turns. On your turn, drop one of your discs into any slot along the top of the grid. It falls to the lowest empty space in that column, so the grid fills from the bottom up.

Winning: the first player to line up four of their colour across, up and down, or diagonally wins. If every space fills with no line of four, call it a draw and play again. To reset, push the slider to the side so all the discs drop out, slide it back to the middle and refill the side columns. Packing up works the same way: discs back in their columns, lids snapped shut, trays folded up.

How it differs from our other Connect 4 pages: the full-size Connect 4 is a bigger upright grid that stands on two legs, with a slider bar along the bottom and discs that sit loose in the box, which suits home play with a few people watching. Connect 4 Grab and Go: Disney Frozen 2 is this same travel unit dressed up with a sheet of Frozen 2 labels and white and blue checkers. This plain box keeps the classic red and yellow and has no labels to stick on.

Tip: the small grid doesn't change the thinking. Before every drop, look for three of your opponent's discs in a line with an open space and block it, and try to set up two threats at once so only one can be stopped. On a long train ride, a best-of-five series with the first move swapping each game keeps things fair between brothers, sisters and cousins.

From Hasbro's contents list and leaflet for item F8253 (grid with trays, 21 yellow discs, 21 red discs, instructions), which the listing details repeat; the leaflet's first-game step shows there are two trays. The older B1000 box has the same parts but calls the discs checkers. The Frozen 2 edition adds a label sheet and has white and blue checkers, and the full-size Connect 4 has a bigger grid with two legs and a slider bar.

About the editions

Hasbro brought its Grab and Go travel range to India in 2019, and the listing names Hasbro India Toys in Mumbai as importer. Our Amazon.in link goes to the current 2023 box (item F8253), sold through Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in. The listing gives India as the country of origin, but Hasbro's photo of its US box says it is made in Vietnam and we haven't seen the back of the box sold here, so we don't call it made in India.

Before you choose

  • The box front should show the Hasbro Gaming and Connect 4 logos with the Grab & Go name, and the item number F8253.
  • Inside you should find one grid with two trays, 21 yellow discs, 21 red discs and a rules leaflet, nothing else.
  • Hasbro's unit keeps each colour in a lidded column on the side of the grid and has a slider tab that drops all the discs out at once.
  • Pocket four-in-a-row sets from other brands are not this game, and neither is a listing that uses the Connect 4 name but names another maker, or none.

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews or forum threads about the 2023 Grab and Go box, so this summary rests on Hasbro's description, its rules leaflet and the classic game inside. Hasbro presents it as the same Connect 4 in a compact size, with built-in storage for all 42 discs, meant for road trips, trains and planes. The game itself is unchanged: Wikipedia notes that Connect Four was solved in 1988 as a first-player win with perfect play, though at a family table the player who spots threats sooner usually wins. For Indian families it is a quick two-player game that fits in a school bag or beside a train berth; the trade-off is small discs that are easy to lose and a grid too small for an audience.

What people love

  • The full-size rules, so anyone who knows Connect 4 can play straight away
  • All 42 discs pack away inside the unit, with the trays folded up
  • Small and light for journeys: 0.16 kg by the listing
  • Classic red and yellow, with no labels to stick on

Common complaints

  • Small discs are easy to drop and lose on the move
  • The small grid is harder for onlookers to follow than the full-size game
  • An adult has to clip the trays on before the first game

Questions people ask about Connect 4 Grab and Go

What is the difference between Connect 4 and Connect 4 Grab and Go?

The rules are identical: drop discs and be first to get four in a row. Grab and Go is Hasbro's travel version, a smaller all-in-one grid that stores the discs in lidded side columns and folds its trays away. The full-size game has a bigger grid on two legs, and its discs sit loose in the box.

How is the plain Connect 4 Grab and Go different from the Frozen 2 edition?

It is the same travel unit and the same game. The Frozen 2 edition comes with a sheet of Frozen 2 labels to stick on and uses white and blue checkers; the plain box has the classic red and yellow discs and no labels.

What age is Connect 4 Grab and Go for?

Hasbro rates it for 2 players aged 6 and up. The discs are small, so keep them away from children under 3, and an adult should clip the trays on before the first game.

Is Connect 4 Grab and Go made in India?

We can't confirm it. The Amazon.in listing gives India as the country of origin and names Hasbro India Toys, Mumbai, as importer, but Hasbro's photo of its US box says 'Made in Vietnam', and we haven't seen the back of the box sold in India.

Is Connect 4 Grab and Go good for train journeys and flights?

That is what Hasbro made it for. Packed up, the discs sit inside the side columns behind snap-shut lids and the trays fold up, so the game travels as one small unit; the listing gives about 25 x 16 x 5 cm. Put the discs away after each game, because they are small and roll easily under a seat.
