The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Children of 3 to 6 who love Transformers and are ready for a first game with turns and a winner

Think twice if You already have Hasbro's My Little Pony or PJ Masks Matching Game: this is the same game with different pictures

How we rate it

Learning curve. Turn two cards and keep them if they match. A three-year-old can follow it with a few pairs, so it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO.

Luck & skill. The first flips are lucky guesses; after that, remembering where cards turned up decides who collects the pairs, and young children often beat adults at it.

Interaction. Nobody can block anyone, but every card another player turns over tells you something, so everyone watches every turn.

Set-up. Mix the cards face down and lay them out in a grid; with young children, use only some of the pairs.

Reading. Cards are matched by their pictures; only the rules sheet has words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Transformers Matching Game right for you?

Great if

  • Children of 3 to 6 who love Transformers and are ready for a first game with turns and a winner
  • Playing with grandparents or an older cousin: there is nothing to read, so any home language works
  • A small, light birthday or return gift for a robot-mad child
  • A quiet game for a rainy afternoon or the school holidays, on the floor or a table

Skip it if

  • You already have Hasbro's My Little Pony or PJ Masks Matching Game: this is the same game with different pictures
  • Your child is 7 or older and already good at pairs games; there is nothing more to it than flip and match
  • There is a child under 3 at home: Hasbro rates the game 3 and up, and loose cards are easily chewed, bent or lost

How Transformers Matching Game plays

Set-up: shuffle the 72 picture cards face down and lay them out in a grid on the floor or a table. With a three-year-old, begin with only a few pairs; Hasbro's rules suggest starting small and adding more cards as children get the hang of it.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Children match the cards by their pictures, so a child who can't read yet can play in any language. Only the short rules sheet is in English, and you can explain it in Hindi, Telugu or any home language in a minute.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Flip

Turn over any two cards so that everyone can see the pictures.

  2. 2
    Match

Two matching robots are yours to keep, and you take another turn. If they don't match, turn them face down again in the same spots, and play passes to the left.

  3. 3
    Win

When the last pair has been found, everyone counts their cards. The biggest pile wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Transformers Matching Game goes

A turn: the youngest player starts, and play moves to the left. Turn over one card, then a second, so everyone can see both pictures. If they match, the pair is yours and you go again, for as long as you keep finding matches. If they don't, turn both back face down in the same spots, and it's the next player's go.

Winning: once every pair has been taken, each player counts the cards in their pile, and the biggest pile wins. Hasbro calls it a game for 1 or more players; a child on their own can clear a small grid and try to do it in fewer turns the next time.

Same game, different pictures: our My Little Pony Matching Game and PJ Masks Matching Game pages describe the same 72-card Hasbro game with the same rules; only the characters and the theme differ, so choose the one your child already loves. For a different twist, Funskool's Memory Animal Family pairs each baby animal with its parents, and Match & Move Memory turns the cards into a race round a board.

Tip: lay the cards in neat, straight rows. Young players find 'third card in the top row' much easier to remember than a jumbled heap, and you can add one more row each time they clear the grid.

From Hasbro's contents list for item F5410 (72 cards and instructions), which the listing details repeat. Hasbro doesn't give the number of pairs; 72 cards make 36 pairs. Hasbro's My Little Pony, PJ Masks and Peppa Pig matching games have the same contents with other pictures.

About the editions

This is the Indian release: Hasbro's rules sheet for F5410 carries an India print code and gives Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as the place to contact, and the listing names the same company as importer. Our Amazon.in link goes to that game in Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in. Where the cards are printed isn't stated by Hasbro or the listing.

Before you choose

  • Look for the Hasbro Gaming logo and the Transformers logo with 'Matching Game' on the box front; Hasbro's item number is F5410.
  • The box holds 72 picture cards and a rules sheet, nothing more.
  • The cards show Transformers robots such as Bumblebee, Arcee and Optimus Prime in cartoon-style artwork.
  • The rules sheet names Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as the consumer contact.
  • Robot picture cards from other brands, or with no maker named, are not Hasbro's game.

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews, videos or forum threads about Hasbro's Transformers Matching Game, so this summary leans on Hasbro's own description and on the classic pairs game, which Wikipedia calls a particularly good game for young children. It plays exactly like Hasbro's other matching games: flip two cards, keep the pairs, most cards wins. The pull is the robots. A child who already knows Bumblebee and Optimus Prime has a reason to sit down for a turn-taking game and a name for every card, and Hasbro's tip of starting with fewer cards lets the game grow with a child from 3. Older children who are already good at pairs games will find nothing new here.

What people love

  • Transformers robots that young fans recognise, such as Bumblebee and Optimus Prime
  • Easy to scale: begin with a few pairs and add more as a child improves
  • No reading needed, so grandparents and children can play in any language
  • Sturdy cards sized for small hands, as Hasbro describes them

Common complaints

  • Nothing beyond flip and match, so children of about 7 and up may lose interest
  • 72 loose cards go missing easily without a pouch or rubber band
  • If you already own another of Hasbro's matching games, this adds new pictures, not a new game

Questions people ask about Transformers Matching Game

How do you play the Transformers Matching Game?

Spread the cards face down in a grid. On your turn, flip any two: a matching pair is yours to keep and you go again, and a non-matching pair goes back face down in the same places. When all the pairs are found, the player holding the most cards wins.

Is the Transformers Matching Game the same as the My Little Pony and PJ Masks matching games?

Yes, apart from the pictures. Hasbro makes the same 72-card matching game for ages 3 and up in Transformers, My Little Pony, PJ Masks and Peppa Pig themes, with the same rules in each box.

What age is the Transformers Matching Game for?

Hasbro rates it for ages 3 and up and for 1 or more players. Three-year-olds manage best with a handful of pairs and a grown-up alongside; the full set of 72 cards suits children of about 5 and up.

Which Transformers are on the cards?

Hasbro names Bumblebee, Arcee and Optimus Prime 'and more', in artwork inspired by a Transformers cartoon series. It doesn't list every robot, so other characters appear too.

Is the Transformers Matching Game made in India?

Neither Hasbro nor the Amazon.in listing says so. The rules sheet is printed for India and gives Hasbro India Toys, Mumbai, as the contact, which shows the game is sold here officially, but not where it is made.
