Great for Children of 3 to 6 who are ready for their first game with turns and a winner

Think twice if Your child doesn't know or like My Little Pony; Funskool's Memory Animal Family is the same kind of game with animals

How we rate it

Learning curve. Turn two cards and keep them if they match. A three-year-old can follow it with a few pairs, which puts it at 1 on our scale with UNO.

Luck & skill. The first flips are lucky guesses. After that, remembering where cards turned up decides who collects pairs, and young children often beat adults at it.

Interaction. You can't block anyone, but every card another player turns over tells you something, so everyone watches every turn.

Set-up. Mix the cards face down and lay them out in a grid; with young children, use only some of the pairs.

Reading. Matching is done by the pictures; only the rules sheet has words to read.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is My Little Pony Matching Game right for you?

Great if

  • Children of 3 to 6 who are ready for their first game with turns and a winner
  • My Little Pony fans: the cards show characters from the A New Generation film
  • A quiet game with grandparents; nobody needs to read, so it works in any home language
  • A small, light birthday or return gift for a pony fan

Skip it if

  • Your child doesn't know or like My Little Pony; Funskool's Memory Animal Family is the same kind of game with animals
  • Your children are 7 or older and already good at pairs games; there is nothing more to it than flip and match
  • You have a toddler under 3 at home: Hasbro rates it 3 and up, and 72 loose cards are easy to bend, chew and lose

How My Little Pony Matching Game plays

Set-up: mix the 72 cards face down on the floor or a table and lay them out in a grid. Hasbro's rules suggest starting younger players with fewer cards and adding more as they get the hang of it, so a three-year-old might begin with six or eight pairs.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: You match cards by their pictures, so children who can't read yet can play in any language. Only the short rules sheet is in English, and a parent can explain it in Hindi, Tamil or any home language in a minute.

The full explanation: how a game of My Little Pony Matching Game goes

A turn: the youngest player goes first, then play passes to the left. Turn over any card, then a second one, so everyone can see them. If the two pictures match, take the pair, put it in front of you and go again; your turn carries on as long as you keep finding matches. If they don't match, turn both back face down in the same places, and it's the next player's turn.

Winning: when every pair has been found, each player counts the cards in their pile, and the most cards wins. Hasbro rates the game for 1 or more players; a child playing alone can lay out some pairs, clear the grid and try to do it in fewer turns next time.

How it compares with our other memory games: Funskool's Memory Animal Family also has 72 cards, but each pair is an animal's parents on one card and its baby on the other, and it is made in India. Funskool's Match & Move Memory adds a board: you turn over one card at a time to race your piece round a picture path. The My Little Pony Matching Game is the plain pairs game, with characters children know from the film.

Tip: say the ponies' names out loud as cards turn up ('that's Sunny again, where was the other one?'). It helps young children remember where things are, and it works just as well in English, Hindi or any language you speak at home.

About the editions

Hasbro sells this game in India itself: the rules sheet Hasbro publishes for item F5409 is printed for India, with Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai as the consumer contact, and the listing names the same company. Our Amazon.in link goes to that box, sold through Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in. Neither Hasbro nor the listing says where the cards are made.

Before you choose

  • The box should show the Hasbro Gaming logo and the My Little Pony logo with 'Matching Game'; Hasbro's item number is F5409.
  • Inside there should be 72 picture cards and a rules sheet, nothing else.
  • The cards show the ponies from My Little Pony: A New Generation, such as Sunny, Hitch and Zipp.
  • The rules sheet Hasbro publishes for this game gives Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as the consumer contact.
  • Pony picture cards from other brands, or with no maker named, are not Hasbro's game.

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews, videos or forum threads about Hasbro's My Little Pony Matching Game, so this summary leans on Hasbro's description and on the classic pairs game, which Wikipedia calls a particularly good game for young children. It is the plain flip-two-and-match game, and the draw is the ponies: children who know the film will name the characters as they turn up, which helps them remember. Hasbro says the 72 cards are sturdy and sized for small hands, and its rules suggest starting with fewer cards for younger players, so the game can grow with a child from 3. Older children who are already good at pairs games will find nothing new in it.

What people love

  • Characters from the My Little Pony film that young fans recognise and like to name
  • Easy to scale: start with a few pairs and add more as a child improves
  • No reading needed, so grandparents and children can play in any language
  • Sturdy cards sized for small hands, as Hasbro describes them

Common complaints

  • Nothing beyond flip and match, so children of about 7 and up may lose interest
  • 72 loose cards are easy to lose or bend without a pouch or rubber band
  • A child who doesn't follow My Little Pony gets nothing extra over a plain memory game

Questions people ask about My Little Pony Matching Game

How do you play the My Little Pony Matching Game?

Lay the cards face down in a grid. On your turn, flip two: if the pictures match, keep the pair and go again; if not, turn them back in the same places. When all the pairs are found, the player with the most cards wins.

What age is the My Little Pony Matching Game for?

Hasbro rates it for ages 3 and up, for 1 or more players. Three-year-olds do best with a few pairs and an adult beside them, as Hasbro's rules suggest; the full 72 cards suit children of about 5 and up.

Is the My Little Pony Matching Game the same as the PJ Masks and Transformers matching games?

Apart from the pictures, yes. Hasbro makes the same 72-card matching game in My Little Pony, PJ Masks, Transformers and Peppa Pig themes, each for ages 3 and up.

Can a child play the My Little Pony Matching Game alone?

Hasbro rates it for 1 or more players, though its rules describe the game for two or more. A child alone can lay out some pairs, clear the grid and count the turns it took, then try to beat that.

Which is better for a three-year-old: the My Little Pony Matching Game or Memory Animal Family?

Both are pairs games with 72 cards for children from 3, played the same way. Pick the pony game for a child who loves My Little Pony; pick Funskool's made-in-India Memory Animal Family for animals, and parent-and-baby pairs that give you plenty to talk about.
