The quick verdict

Great for Pre-schoolers who love PJ Masks and are ready for a first turn-taking game

Think twice if You already have Hasbro's Transformers or My Little Pony Matching Game: this is the same game with other pictures

How we rate it

Learning curve. Flip two cards, keep a match. With a few pairs, a three-year-old can follow it, which puts it at 1 on our scale alongside UNO.

Luck & skill. Early flips are guesses; later, the player who remembers where each hero turned up collects the pairs, and small children are often better at this than adults.

Interaction. There is no blocking or attacking, but every card someone else flips is a clue for you, so players follow each turn closely.

Set-up. Mix the cards face down and set them out in rows; for a young child, use only some of the pairs.

Reading. Matching is by picture; the only words are in the rules sheet.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is PJ Masks Matching Game right for you?

Great if

  • Pre-schoolers who love PJ Masks and are ready for a first turn-taking game
  • Mixed-age play at home: an older sibling or a grandparent can join in, and nobody needs to read
  • A light birthday or return gift for a three- to six-year-old PJ Masks fan
  • Short games before bedtime, since you can play with as few or as many pairs as you like

Skip it if

  • You already have Hasbro's Transformers or My Little Pony Matching Game: this is the same game with other pictures
  • Your child has outgrown PJ Masks or is 7 or older and quick at pairs games; there is no extra challenge
  • A baby or toddler under 3 is in the house: Hasbro rates it 3 and up, and loose cards bend, tear and vanish easily

How PJ Masks Matching Game plays

Set-up: mix all the picture cards face down on the floor or a table, then lay them out in rows to make a grid. Hasbro's rules suggest that younger players start with fewer cards and add more as they improve, so a first game might use only five or six pairs.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: There are no words on the cards to read: children match the pictures. The rules sheet is in English, but the game takes a minute to explain in Hindi, Kannada or whatever you speak at home.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Flip

Pick any two cards and turn them over where everyone can see them.

  2. 2
    Match

Two matching heroes go into your pile, and you flip again. If they don't match, turn them back face down in the same places; the next player goes.

  3. 3
    Win

When the grid is empty, count your cards. Whoever has the most wins.

The full explanation: how a game of PJ Masks Matching Game goes

A turn: the youngest player goes first, and turns pass to the left. Flip one card, then another, for everyone to see. Two matching heroes go into your pile, and you get another turn straight away; your turn only ends when you turn up two cards that don't match. Those go back face down in exactly the same spots.

Winning: when no cards are left in the grid, everyone counts their pile, and whoever has the most cards wins. Hasbro sells it for 1 or more players, so a child can also play alone, clearing a small grid and counting how many turns it took.

One game, three themes: our Transformers Matching Game and My Little Pony Matching Game pages cover the same 72-card Hasbro game with the same rules; what changes is the pictures and the theme. Funskool's Memory Animal Family is a pairs game with a different twist, a baby animal on one card and its parents on the other, and Match & Move Memory adds a board to race round.

Tip: when a three-year-old plays with older children, a simple house rule keeps it fair: let the youngest look at one extra card each turn before choosing two to flip. Drop the rule once they start winning on their own.

From Hasbro's contents list for item F5408 (72 cards and instructions), which the listing details repeat. Hasbro doesn't give the number of pairs; 72 cards make 36 pairs. Hasbro's Transformers, My Little Pony and Peppa Pig matching games have the same contents with other pictures.

About the editions

Hasbro's rules sheet for item F5408 is the Indian print, giving Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai as the consumer contact, and the listing names the same company as importer, so this is the game Hasbro sells here. Our Amazon.in link goes to it. Hasbro and the listing don't say where the cards are made.

Before you choose

  • The box front should carry the Hasbro Gaming logo, the PJ Masks logo and 'Matching Game'; Hasbro's item number is F5408.
  • Inside: 72 picture cards and a rules sheet, nothing else.
  • The cards show the PJ Masks heroes Catboy, Owlette and Gekko and their friends.
  • The rules sheet gives Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as the consumer contact.
  • PJ Masks picture cards with no maker named, or from an unknown brand, are not Hasbro's game.

What reviewers and players say

We found no written reviews or forum threads about Hasbro's PJ Masks Matching Game, only a few short YouTube videos that we have not relied on, so this summary draws on Hasbro's description and on the classic pairs game, which Wikipedia describes as particularly good for young children. The game is plain flip-two-and-match with 72 cards, the same as Hasbro's other themes. What this box adds is the heroes: children who watch PJ Masks will happily name Catboy, Owlette and Gekko as they appear, which keeps them at the table and helps them remember where each card lies. Start with a few pairs, as Hasbro's rules suggest, and grow the grid as the child improves; children of 7 and up who are already sharp at pairs games will want something with more to it.

What people love

  • Catboy, Owlette, Gekko and friends, whom young PJ Masks fans know by name
  • Grows with the child: a few pairs at 3, all 72 cards a couple of years later
  • No reading, so it works across ages and home languages
  • Sturdy cards sized for small hands, as Hasbro describes them

Common complaints

  • Only flip and match, so it holds little for children of 7 and over
  • 72 loose cards are easy to lose without a pouch or rubber band
  • A child who doesn't follow PJ Masks gains nothing over a plain memory game

How do you play the PJ Masks Matching Game?

Lay the cards face down in rows. Each turn, flip two: if the pictures match, keep them and go again; if not, turn them back over where they were. When every pair has been collected, the player with the most cards wins.

Is the PJ Masks Matching Game the same as the Transformers and My Little Pony matching games?

What age is the PJ Masks Matching Game for?

Hasbro rates it for ages 3 and up and for 1 or more players. Start three-year-olds with a few pairs, as Hasbro's rules suggest; by about 5, most children can manage all 72 cards.

Which PJ Masks characters are in the game?

Hasbro names Catboy, Owlette and Gekko 'and all their friends', in artwork inspired by the PJ Masks cartoon series. It doesn't list every character on the cards.

Is the Hasbro PJ Masks Matching Game made in India?

We couldn't confirm it. Hasbro's rules sheet is printed for India and names Hasbro India Toys, Mumbai, as the contact, but neither it nor the Amazon.in listing says where the game is made.
