Great for Parents who want children to read and speak more Telugu, since the Action cards are short sentences someone reads out

Think twice if Not everyone at your table reads Telugu; the English box on our The Game of Life page suits mixed groups better

How we rate it

Learning curve. Each turn is spin, move and follow the space, with a few simple choices. Only the money counting needs a grown-up's eye, so it rates 1 on our scale, alongside UNO and Connect 4.

Luck & skill. Spins and blind card draws decide most of the game. Choosing college, investing early and deciding when to retire help a little.

Interaction. Players mostly travel their own road; some Action cards involve everyone, and investments pay out on other players' spins.

Set-up. Fit the spinner and sort the money the first time. Then choose a banker, shuffle the Action, Career and House cards into piles and give each player a car, a peg and an Invest card.

Reading. The Action cards and the board carry short Telugu sentences and words that someone has to read aloud.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is The Game of Life (Telugu edition) right for you?

Great if

  • Parents who want children to read and speak more Telugu, since the Action cards are short sentences someone reads out
  • Families in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana or Telugu homes elsewhere who would rather play in their own language
  • Sankranti and summer-holiday afternoons with three or four players of mixed ages
  • A first talk about money with children: salaries, loans, investing and buying a house

Skip it if

  • Not everyone at your table reads Telugu; the English box on our The Game of Life page suits mixed groups better
  • You prefer games where skill decides the winner; this one is mostly luck
  • Your group is often bigger than four, as there are only four cars

A place on the honours list

Good company to be in.

How The Game of Life (Telugu edition) plays

To begin, hand every player a car, a peg to sit in it and the Invest card of the same colour, and pick someone to look after the bank. The first decision comes before the first spin: pay 100K for college, which opens the careers marked with a diploma, or start work at once by drawing two Career cards and keeping one.

  • Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Hasbro says the box, the game guide, the words on the board and the Action cards are in Telugu, so players need to read short Telugu sentences throughout the game. Money is counted in thousands. A child of 8 who reads Telugu can manage; a younger child can play if an adult reads the cards aloud. English and Tamil editions of the same game also exist.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Spin

Spin and move your car; stop early at any STOP space and make the choice it shows.

  2. 2
    Read

Follow your space: take your Payday, read an Action card aloud, add a peg, deal in houses or invest in a number.

  3. 3
    Retire

Once all cars have retired, cash in houses and pegs, repay loans and count up. The richest player wins.

The full explanation: how a game of The Game of Life (Telugu edition) goes

Turns are quick. Spin, move your car, and follow the space you land on. Passing a Payday pays your salary; Action spaces mean drawing a card and reading it to everyone; some spaces add a peg to your car for a friend, a pet or a baby; House spaces let you buy a house or sell one, where a red or black spin decides how much you get. STOP spaces make you halt for graduation, marriage, starting a family, a midlife spinout and the choice of when to retire.

Money matters all the way through. Landing on an Invest space lets you pay 50K to put your Invest card under a number; each time anyone spins it, you are paid, starting at 10K and rising to 50K, so it pays to invest early. When you can't pay, the bank gives you a loan, and each one costs 60K to repay at the end.

Retiring first brings the biggest bonus, 200K. Then come the totals: each house is sold for cash, every partner, child, pet or friend riding in your car adds 50K, loans come off, and the richest player takes the game.

For reading practice, take turns being the reader: whoever draws a card reads it aloud in Telugu, and an adult helps with longer words. Let an older child be the banker, too, so they get used to counting in thousands.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

Hasbro India brought out this Telugu edition in December 2022, with Monopoly and Monopoly Deal in Telugu, so it is a version made for Indian families, not a foreign edition. We have not seen Hasbro say where the Telugu box is made, or a box back that says so, so we don't mark it as made in India. Our Amazon.in link goes to the Telugu box.

Before you choose

  • Look for the Hasbro Gaming logo and the game's name in Telugu on the box front.
  • The English, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam boxes all use item F0800, so the item number alone won't tell you the language; check that the box and game guide are in Telugu.
  • Check the parts against Hasbro's list: 90 cards (55 Action, 20 Career, 11 House, 4 Invest), 4 cars, 36 pegs in six colours, a gameboard with spinner, a money pack and a game guide.
  • Pick a listing that names Hasbro or Hasbro Gaming and gives Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as importer.

What reviewers and players say

Nobody seems to have reviewed the Telugu box on its own, so this is what reviewers say about the same 2021 game. They enjoy the big life choices it hands out, from college or a job to marriage, children and houses, and the stories that follow. The Invest cards earn praise for keeping everyone involved, even after retiring. The main criticism is how much the spinner decides, along with a playing time close to an hour, so it is a family conversation game rather than a strategy game.

What people love

  • Choices like college or a job, a family and a home that give everyone something to talk about
  • Investing in a number keeps you earning on other players' turns
  • Rules simple enough for children and grandparents to share a board
  • Nobody is knocked out; the game ends when everyone has retired

Common complaints

  • The spinner matters far more than your decisions
  • Games can run close to an hour
  • A reviewer found the 2021 spinner less sturdy than older versions

Questions people ask about The Game of Life (Telugu edition)

Is there a Telugu version of The Game of Life?

Yes. Hasbro India launched The Game of Life in Telugu in December 2022, along with Monopoly and Monopoly Deal in Telugu. It is the same 2021 game as the English box, for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and up.

Which parts of the Telugu edition are in Telugu?

Hasbro said the packaging, the game guide, the words on the board and the Action cards are in Telugu, so the game can be played entirely in Telugu. We could not confirm whether the play money carries any Telugu text.

Is it good for children learning to read Telugu?

It can help. Hasbro pitched the Telugu edition as a way for parents to get children reading, speaking and practising Telugu, and every Action card is a short sentence to read aloud. Younger readers will still need an adult beside them.

Are the Telugu rules available online?

Not that we could find. Hasbro has put only the English guide for this game (item F0800) online. The Telugu guide comes in the box, and because the contents are the same, the English guide and English how-to videos explain the same rules.
