Great for Families who speak Tamil at home and want a board game nobody has to translate for the grandparents

Think twice if Some regular players can't read Tamil; the English box (our The Game of Life page) is the easier choice for mixed groups

How we rate it

Learning curve. Spin, move and do what the space says, with a few yes-or-no choices. Counting money in thousands is the only fiddly part, so it sits with UNO and Connect 4 at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. The spinner moves you, sets your house sale prices and pays out investments, and cards are drawn blind. College, early investing and when to retire are the only real choices.

Interaction. Everyone follows their own road; the contact comes from Action cards that involve other players and from investments that pay you on other people's spins.

Set-up. The first time, an adult slides the spinner into place and the money is sorted. After that, pick a banker, shuffle the three card piles and hand out cars, pegs and Invest cards.

Reading. Action, Career and House cards carry short sentences or names in Tamil that someone has to read out, and the board has Tamil words on its spaces.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is The Game of Life (Tamil edition) right for you?

Great if

  • Families who speak Tamil at home and want a board game nobody has to translate for the grandparents
  • Children of 8 to 12 who read Tamil, or are learning to, since every Action card is a short sentence to read out
  • Relaxed holiday evenings, such as Pongal or the summer break, with three or four players around one board
  • Gifting to cousins in Tamil Nadu or in Tamil families abroad

Skip it if

  • Some regular players can't read Tamil; the English box (our The Game of Life page) is the easier choice for mixed groups
  • You want a game where planning beats luck; the spinner decides most of the result
  • You usually have five or more players, as the box has only four cars

How The Game of Life (Tamil edition) plays

Each player takes a car, puts one peg in it for themselves and takes the Invest card of the same colour. One person keeps the bank, and the Action, Career and House cards go into three face-down piles. Before anyone spins, each player picks a road: college, which costs 100K but opens the better-paid careers marked with a diploma, or a job straight away, choosing one of two Career cards.

  • Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
  • Reading and language: There is a fair amount of reading, all in Tamil: Hasbro says the box, the game guide, the words on the board and the Action cards are printed in Tamil, and its launch examples show Tamil career and house names too. Money is counted in thousands. Children of 8 who read Tamil can follow along; younger ones need an adult to read the cards aloud. The same game is also sold in English and Telugu.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Spin

Flick the spinner and drive your car that many spaces; a STOP space halts you early for a big life choice.

  2. 2
    Act

Do what the space says: collect Payday, read out an Action card, add a peg, buy or sell a house, or invest 50K in a number.

  3. 3
    Win

When everyone has retired, sell houses, collect 50K per extra peg, repay loans and count your cash. Richest wins.

The full explanation: how a game of The Game of Life (Tamil edition) goes

On your turn you flick the spinner and drive forward that many spaces. Every Payday you pass pays your salary. Other spaces tell you what to do: draw an Action card and read it aloud, add a peg for a new friend, pet or baby, or buy or sell a house, where a red or black spin sets the sale price. STOP spaces halt you for the big moments: graduating, getting married, growing your family, a midlife spinout and deciding when to retire.

Invest spaces add a side bet. Pay 50K to slip your Invest card under a number on the board, and from then on you collect every time anyone spins that number, starting at 10K and rising to 50K, so investing early pays more. If you run short, you take a bank loan and pay back 60K for it at the end.

The first player to retire collects the biggest bonus, 200K, and later retirees get less. When the last car is parked, it is time to settle up: houses are sold, every extra peg riding in your car is worth 50K, loans are paid back, and the player left holding the most money wins.

A tip for families with younger children: let one child be the reader who reads every Action, Career and House card aloud in Tamil, while an adult runs the bank. The cards are short, so it turns the game into easy reading practice without slowing it down.

Parts and counts from the Amazon.in listing facts for this box (model F0800), which match Hasbro's F0800 product record and the English box on our The Game of Life page exactly. Which parts are in Tamil comes from Hasbro's July 2022 launch, as reported by afaqs: the packaging, game guide, board and Action cards. Hasbro does not list the money notes.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

This is Hasbro India's own Tamil edition of the 2021 game, launched in July 2022 alongside Monopoly and Monopoly Deal in Tamil, so there is no import to weigh it against. A trade report of that launch described the regional games as made in India, but we have not seen that on Hasbro's own pages or on the box, so we don't mark it as made in India yet. Our Amazon.in link goes to the Tamil box.

Before you choose

  • The box front should show the Hasbro Gaming logo and the same artwork as the 2021 English box (the big spinner and the little cars), with the game's name in Tamil.
  • Item F0800 is used for the English, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam boxes alike, so check that the box front and the game guide are in Tamil rather than relying on the item number.
  • Count the contents: 55 Action, 20 Career, 11 House and 4 Invest cards (90 in all), 4 cars, 36 pegs in six colours, a money pack and a game guide.
  • The listing should name Hasbro or Hasbro Gaming and give Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, as the importer.

What reviewers and players say

We found no reviews of the Tamil edition itself, but reviewers of the same 2021 game like what families have always liked about it: everyone chooses college or a job, marries, buys houses and invests, and those choices give the table plenty to talk about. The Invest cards keep players involved on other people's turns, and nobody is knocked out before the end. The usual complaint is that the spinner decides far more than your choices, so it is a light, luck-driven game that can run close to an hour. It works best for chatty family evenings with children of 8 or more.

What people love

  • Life choices such as college or a job, marriage, children and houses that families enjoy talking about
  • Invest cards that pay you whenever anyone spins your number, even after you retire
  • Simple rules that children of 8 and grandparents can share
  • Play continues until everyone retires, so nobody sits out

Common complaints

  • Luck from the spinner and the cards decides most games
  • At about an hour, it is long for such a light game
  • One reviewer found the 2021 spinner flimsier and missed the old plastic buildings

Questions people ask about The Game of Life (Tamil edition)

Is The Game of Life available in Tamil?

Yes. Hasbro India launched The Game of Life in Tamil in July 2022, together with Tamil editions of Monopoly and Monopoly Deal. It is the same 2021 version of the game sold in English, for 2 to 4 players aged 8 and up.

Is everything in the Tamil edition in Tamil?

Hasbro said the packaging, the game guide, the words on the board and the Action cards are all in Tamil. Its launch examples included Tamil career cards such as astronaut (விண்வெளி வீரர்) and lawyer (வழக்கறிஞர்), and homes such as a dream villa (கனவு பங்களா) and a farmhouse (பண்ணைவீடு).

Is the Tamil Game of Life the same game as the English one?

Yes. It has the same item number, F0800, and the same contents, so the rules are the same. That also means an English or Hindi how-to-play video, or Hasbro's English guide online, explains the Tamil box too.

Can a child who is still learning Tamil play?

Yes, with some help. The game is for ages 8 and up, and the only reading is short sentences on cards and the board, so an adult or an older child can read each card aloud until the younger ones can manage.

How long does The Game of Life take?

Hasbro doesn't print a playing time. Expect roughly 45 minutes to an hour with four players, a little less with two.
