The quick verdict
Full verdict ↓Great for Train journeys, holidays and visits to grandparents, when a full-size Cluedo box is too bulky to carry
Think twice if You often play with just two: this box is for 3 to 6, and only the full-size Cluedo has a two-player variant
How we rate it
Learning curve. The rules are those of the full-size Cluedo. Turns are simple, but children need a game or two to get the hang of suggestions and note-taking, which puts it at 2 on our scale, alongside Ticket to Ride and Codenames.
Luck & skill. The dice decide how fast you reach rooms and the deal decides your cards, but careful notes and well-chosen suggestions are what win.
Interaction. Nobody attacks anybody, but every suggestion makes someone show you a card, and watching what others suggest gives you clues too.
Set-up. The first time, an adult sticks the two halves of the board onto the plastic base and presses out the weapon tokens and cards; Hasbro says adult assembly is required. After that it takes a few minutes: movers on their start spaces, weapons in separate rooms, three answer cards face down in the centre, the rest dealt out, and a notepad sheet for each player.
Reading. Only names of suspects, weapons and rooms on the cards and the detective sheet. With no Clue cards, there is nothing else to read aloud during play.
Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.
Is Clue Grab and Go right for you?
Great if
- Train journeys, holidays and visits to grandparents, when a full-size Cluedo box is too bulky to carry
- Children from 8 who are ready for their first real deduction game, with a parent or older cousin alongside
- Groups of four to six on a holiday evening, since it takes up to six players
- A small gift for a family that already loves Cluedo and travels a lot
Skip it if
- You often play with just two: this box is for 3 to 6, and only the full-size Cluedo has a two-player variant
- You want the extras of Hasbro's 2023 full-size game, such as Clue cards and the magnifying-glass die
- There is a toddler at home: the movers, dice and card tokens are small parts and not for children under 3
How Clue Grab and Go plays
Set-up: the first time, an adult peels the backing off the two halves of the self-adhesive board, sticks them onto the plastic base so the Clue logo lines up in the middle, and presses out the square weapon tokens and the cards. For each game, put the six movers on their coloured start spaces and choose a character, put the weapons in separate rooms, and shuffle the suspect, weapon and room cards as three piles. The top card of each pile goes face down in the centre of the board without anyone looking: that is the answer. Deal out the rest, take a sheet from the detective notepad (bring your own pen) and tick off the cards in your hand.
- Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
- Reading and language: The cards and the detective sheet only carry the names of suspects, weapons and rooms, in English, and there are no Clue cards to read aloud. Once one person has explained the rules, children still learning English can keep up, and the table talk can be in Hindi, Tamil or any mix of languages.

A turn, step by step
- 1Move
Roll both dice and move up to that many squares towards a room, entering through a doorway. If you start in a room, you may stay and suggest, or take a secret passage.
- 2Suggest
In a room, name a suspect, a weapon and that room, and move both into it. The player on your left secretly shows you one of those cards if they can; otherwise the next player checks.
- 3Accuse
Once per game, on your turn and in any room, name who, what and where, then secretly check the three cards in the centre. Right, and you win; wrong, and you stop taking turns but still show cards.
The full explanation: how a game of Clue Grab and Go goes
A turn: everyone rolls one die and the highest number starts, then play goes clockwise. On your turn, roll both dice and move up to that many squares, not diagonally and not over or onto another mover. You enter rooms through their doorways, but you can't pass a doorway another player is blocking. If you begin your turn in a room, you can stay there and make a suggestion, or take a secret passage to the room it connects to.
Suggestions: in a room, say which suspect you think did it, with which weapon, in the room you are standing in, and move that suspect and weapon into the room. The player on your left secretly shows you one of those cards if they hold one; if not, the next player checks, and so on. Mark what you are shown on your sheet. If nobody can show you anything, you may be onto the answer, unless you named a card from your own hand.
Winning: you get one accusation in the whole game. Make it on your turn while you are in any room, name a suspect, a weapon and a room, then secretly check the three cards in the centre. If you are right, you win. If you are wrong, put the cards back unseen; you take no more turns but still show cards to others. If nobody accuses correctly, the murderer gets away.
How it differs from our full-size Cluedo page: Hasbro's full-size 2023 box (item F6420) has a large board, takes 2 to 6 players with a two-player variant, adds 29 Clue cards drawn when the magnifying glass comes up on a die, and keeps the answer in a solve envelope. The travel box has the same six suspects, suggestions and single accusation, but plays on a small board fixed to a storage base, with flat card weapon tokens, two ordinary dice, no Clue cards, no envelope and at least three players.

From the contents printed on Hasbro's photo of the F8251 box back and in its 2023 rules leaflet, the box our link goes to. There is no solve envelope: the three answer cards sit face down in the centre of the board. Hasbro's full-size 2023 Cluedo (item F6420) has different parts: a larger board, 50 cards including 29 Clue cards, a solve envelope and a die with a magnifying glass.

What reviewers and players say
We found no written reviews or forum threads about the 2023 travel box, so this summary leans on Hasbro's own description and rules, and on the classic game it shrinks. Hasbro pitches it for road trips, train and plane journeys and holidays, with the same who, where and with-what puzzle as the full-size game and every part stored in the game unit. Hasbro has sold a Grab & Go Clue for years, and it brought the Grab and Go range to India in 2019 with a TV advert set on a train. For Indian families it is the same deduction game in a box that fits a bag; the trade-offs are a smaller board, flat card weapons, no Clue cards and no game for two.
What people love
- The full Cluedo puzzle, suggestions and accusation included, in a travel-size box
- Every part has a home in the storage base, so pieces are packed away between games
- The suspects of Hasbro's 2023 edition, the same cast as the current full-size game
- Takes up to six players, enough for cousins on a holiday
Common complaints
- Small movers and card tokens are easy to lose on a journey
- You need at least three players: there are no rules for two
- As in the full game, a wrong accusation means you stop taking turns

Questions people ask about Clue Grab and Go
What is the difference between Cluedo and Clue Grab and Go?
Clue Grab and Go is Hasbro's travel version of Cluedo, with the same suspects, suggestions and accusation. It plays on a small board fixed to a plastic base that stores the pieces, has flat card weapons and no Clue cards, magnifying-glass die or solve envelope, and needs at least three players. The full-size board game has a bigger board and takes 2 to 6.
Can two people play Clue Grab and Go?
No. Hasbro's rules for the travel box are for 3 to 6 players and have no two-player variant. If you mostly play as a pair, the full-size Cluedo has two-player rules, or try a two-player deduction game such as Guess Who?.
Is Clue Grab and Go the same as the Clue Card Game?
No, they are different games. Grab and Go is the board game in a small box, with movers, dice, rooms and a detective notepad. The Clue Card Game (item E7589) has no board or dice and is a quicker card-only puzzle for 3 to 4 players.
Where do the answer cards go in Clue Grab and Go?
There is no envelope in the travel box. At the start, one suspect, one weapon and one room card go face down in the centre of the board without anyone looking. Whoever makes an accusation checks those three cards in secret and puts them back if they are wrong.
Is Clue Grab and Go made in India?
Not that we can confirm. The listing behind our Amazon.in link is Hasbro India's own and gives India as the country of origin, but Hasbro's photo of the North American box says made in Vietnam, and we haven't seen the back of the box sold here. It is the same Hasbro travel game either way.
