Great for Big family gatherings: up to 12 players, all guessing at the same time

Think twice if You want strategy or a board; this is all questions and answers

How we rate it

Learning curve. Read a question, write a guess, compare. Anyone who can write a word can play, so it sits with UNO at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. Which questions come up is luck, but knowing the people at the table is what scores.

Interaction. Every round is about one player, and everyone else is trying to read them; the reveal is where the laughs come.

Set-up. Hand out the answer cards and markers and put the question cards in a pile.

Reading. One short English question per turn, plus a word or two of writing on your answer card.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Who Knows You Best? right for you?

Great if

  • Big family gatherings: up to 12 players, all guessing at the same time
  • Getting to know new in-laws, cousins or friends' families
  • Couples and close friends who think they know each other well
  • Families with children from about 8 who can write short answers

Skip it if

  • You want strategy or a board; this is all questions and answers

  • Most of your players are under 8 or can't write yet

How Who Knows You Best? plays

Set-up: give each player a dry-erase answer card and a marker, put the 200 question cards in a pile and keep the dry-erase scoreboard handy. The box has 12 answer cards and 12 markers, enough for the full 12 players.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Question cards are printed in English and read aloud, and everyone writes a short answer on a dry-erase card. Answers can be written in Hindi or any language the family shares, so the main reading is the question card. We found no Hindi or regional-language edition.

The full explanation: how a game of Who Knows You Best? goes

A turn: draw a card and read out the question about yourself. The maker's cards include questions such as 'What is my favourite cuisine?', 'Which one would I put in my bowl first, cereal or milk?' and 'Would I rather go scuba diving or skydiving?'. Everyone else secretly writes the answer they think you would give.

Scoring: all the answers are shown at the same time, and every player who matched your answer scores a point on the scoreboard. Then the next player draws a question about themselves.

How you win: the player with the most points at the end wins. The maker's information doesn't say when the game ends, so agree a number of rounds or a time limit before you start.

Tip: pair a younger child with an older cousin on one answer card, and let grandparents answer in whichever language they like; the fun is in the surprises, not the spelling.

About the editions

Who Knows You Best? is Skillmatics' own game, and the box our Amazon.in link goes to, item SKILL425WKB, is the one Skillmatics sold on its Indian shop, with 200 question cards and 12 answer cards and markers. Skillmatics' US shop now sells a newer, smaller version with 100 cards for up to 10 players, which is not this box. We found no statement from Skillmatics on where the Indian box is made.

Before you choose

  • The box should say Skillmatics and 'Who Knows You Best?', with ages 8+ and 2-12 players.
  • Check the contents: 200 question cards, 12 dry-erase answer cards, 12 dry-erase markers, a dry-erase scoreboard and an instruction manual.
  • Skillmatics' item code for this box is SKILL425WKB, and an Indian store's product data gives its barcode as 8904279503748.
  • A box with 100 cards and 10 markers is Skillmatics' newer US version, not this one.
  • Many party games from other brands use a similar name; make sure the listing names Skillmatics.

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent written reviews or forum threads about Skillmatics' Who Knows You Best?. Skillmatics' own blog puts it first in a list of family game-night ideas, as a way for parents and children to find out how well they know each other's likes and dislikes. On paper it is a simple write-and-reveal party game that lives or dies on the group: the better the players know one another, the funnier the surprises. Expect plenty of 'you said what?' moments rather than tactics.

What people love

  • Takes up to 12 players, with an answer card and marker for each
  • Light questions about food, habits and would-you-rather choices
  • Reusable dry-erase cards and scoreboard, so no paper is used up
  • Explained in a couple of minutes

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews yet, so it is hard to say how long 200 questions last for a family that plays often
  • The maker doesn't say when a game ends, so groups need to agree on it
  • Questions are in English only
