Great for Two children, or a parent and child, who want a short spelling game

Think twice if You have more than two players: there are only two sets of tiles, white and blue

How we rate it

Learning curve. One letter a turn and a point a word; the only extra rule is that a word with a special tile scores two. It sits with Connect 4 on our scale.

Luck & skill. There are no dice or cards to turn over in the descriptions found; spelling and where you place each letter decide most games, and the main surprise is what your rival does.

Interaction. Both players build on one grid, so every letter can open a word for your rival or block one.

Set-up. Open the box, which holds the grid and tray, and give each player one colour of tiles.

Reading. Players spell simple English words; there are no cards or text to read during play.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Word Build right for you?

Great if

  • Two children, or a parent and child, who want a short spelling game
  • Practising simple words, since three-letter words like EGG and FOX score
  • Players who like the blocking in Connect 4 but want words instead of discs
  • Tidy play: the grid and tile tray are part of the box

Skip it if

  • You have more than two players: there are only two sets of tiles, white and blue
  • Your children already play Scrabble and want richer scoring
  • You want a long game; the box suggests about 20 minutes

How Word Build plays

Set-up: the Word Build box holds a letter grid and a tray for the tiles. One player takes the 25 white tiles and the other the 25 blue tiles; each colour has 15 consonants and two sets of vowels. There are also twelve light blue tiles: six special letters (J, Q, V, W, X and Z) and six blanks.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Every point comes from spelling English words, though short ones such as EGG and FOX count, so young readers can play. No Hindi or other Indian-language edition was found, and the box text is in English.

The full explanation: how a game of Word Build goes

Players take turns adding a letter tile to the grid, in a column of their choice. Whenever your letter completes a word, you score. The pictures on the box show words reading left to right along a row, diagonally from left to right, and down or up a column, so a single letter can sometimes make more than one word.

Scoring is simple: one point for each word, and two points for a word that uses a special tile, so FOX scores 2 while EGG scores 1. The player with more points at the end wins.

A tip: think about defence as well as your own words. Before you place a letter, check whether it leaves your rival an easy word next turn, and keep the special letters for a spot where they complete a word.

What reviewers and players say

No published reviews or forum threads about Word Build could be found, so this rests on Funskool's videos, the box graphics and Indian store descriptions. Funskool presents it as a vocabulary builder for children, and the scoring is kept very simple: a point a word, or two with a special letter. The shared grid adds Connect 4 style blocking, which gives two players something to think about beyond spelling. Older children who already play Scrabble may find it light.

What people love

  • Scoring simple enough for young children to keep track of
  • Blocking on a shared grid adds strategy to a spelling game
  • The grid, tray and tiles all live in the box
  • Short games of about 20 minutes

Common complaints

  • Only two players
  • Light for older children and adults

Questions people ask about Word Build

How do you play Funskool Word Build?

Two players take turns adding one letter tile to a shared grid, in whichever column they choose. You score a point for every word your letter completes, reading across, diagonally, or up or down a column, and two points if the word uses a special letter. The player with more points at the end wins.

How many players can play Word Build?

Two. One player uses the 25 white tiles and the other the 25 blue tiles. For more children, play in pairs and take turns as a team.

What are the light blue tiles in Word Build?

There are twelve. Six are special letters, J, Q, V, W, X and Z, and a word that uses one scores two points instead of one. The other six are blank tiles.

Is Word Build like Connect 4 or Upwords?

It sits between them. As in Connect 4, you pick a column on a shared grid and try to block your rival; as in Upwords and Scrabble, you score for making words. The scoring is simpler than either word game: a flat point per word.

What age is Word Build for?

Funskool's box says 6 and up. Short words count, so a child who can spell three-letter words can play against an older sibling or a parent.
