The quick verdict

Full verdict ↓

Great for Children of 8 to 12 who enjoy flicking, aiming and throwing games more than long board games

Think twice if You want a strategy game: points come from steady hands and dice rolls, not planning

How we rate it

Learning curve. Each mini game has a one-line rule; the only things to learn are the scoring and where each game sits on the board.

Luck & skill. Six games reward a steady, accurate hand, two are dice luck and Word Chain rewards a good vocabulary; there is little planning.

Interaction. Everyone competes in the same mini game each round, but you can't block or attack other players.

Set-up. The first time, press out the cardboard pieces, twist the plastic parts off their frames, tie the skittles string and fit each game onto the board.

Reading. Only Word Chain uses words, with a category spinner and letter cards; the rules sheet is in English.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Super 9 in 1 right for you?

Great if

  • Children of 8 to 12 who enjoy flicking, aiming and throwing games more than long board games
  • School holidays and rainy afternoons with cousins, since each mini game takes only a few minutes
  • Mixed-age groups: a sharp-eyed child can beat the adults at hoopla or golf
  • Families who want plenty of variety in one box

Skip it if

  • You want a strategy game: points come from steady hands and dice rolls, not planning
  • There are toddlers at home: the set has small balls, rings, pins and tokens
  • You need it for more than four players; there are only four pawns

How Super 9 in 1 plays

The first time, you put the set together: press out the pre-cut cardboard pieces, twist the plastic parts off their frames and fit each game into its marked place on the board. That means the golf green and tee, the snooker table, the hoopla post, the skittles pole with its swinging weight, the buffer at one end of the rink area and the word-chain spinner in one corner. Each player then puts a pawn on START.

  • Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Eight of the nine games need no reading. Word Chain uses a spinner with six categories (animals, flowers, fruits, vegetables, cities and countries) and letter cards, and the rules sheet is in English; families can agree to answer in Hindi or another language as a house rule.

The full explanation: how a game of Super 9 in 1 goes

The youngest player picks the first of the nine games, and everyone plays it. In each game the best player scores 3 points, the second 2 and the third 1, and you move your pawn one square forward for each point; players who tie get the same points. Then play moves round the table, clockwise, to the next game.

Six of the games test aim and touch. Skittles: swing the weight on its string to knock down six pins. Bowling: flick a ball down the rink at six pins, twice each. Snooker: use the stick to send balls into the table's six slots, in three turns. Rink: flick four tokens into zones worth 1 to 4 points. Hoopla: throw rings onto the post from outside the board. Golf: take three swings to land the ball in the hole.

The other three need no aim. Word Chain: spin for a category such as fruits or cities, draw a letter card and say a word that starts with it; the next player must begin with the last letter of your word, and anyone who gets stuck drops out. Game of 13: roll the die as many times as you dare to get close to 13 without going over, ignoring sixes. Score More: throw the die three times and add up, with a six counting as zero.

The first pawn to reach FINISH wins, and if two arrive together, whoever did better in the last game wins. Word Chain works like Antakshari played with words instead of songs, so it is the easiest of the nine to play in a mix of languages.

What reviewers and players say

We found no published review, forum thread or independent video about Funskool's Super 9 in 1, so what follows comes from Funskool's page and rules sheet, not from players. Funskool sells it as many games in one box, and the rules back that up: nine short games, six of them tests of aim and touch, two pure dice luck and one a word game, tied together by a simple race on the board. Expect it to work best for children of 8 to 12 and family get-togethers, while players who want a game of planning will find little here.

What people love

  • Nine different games in one box, each over in a few minutes
  • The aiming games give younger players a real chance against adults
  • Word Chain plays like Antakshari with words, which suits families who mix languages

Common complaints

  • Two of the nine games are pure dice luck
  • First-time assembly has many small parts, and there are only four pawns
