Great for Tamil-speaking families where Paati, Thatha or a younger child prefers to read in Tamil

Think twice if Everyone at your table reads English easily: the English pack has Hasbro's online rules and many more videos

How we rate it

Learning curve. Simple to start, but the many action cards, banking, paying with property and the no-change rule take a game to learn, which puts it with Ticket to Ride and Codenames at 2 on our scale.

Luck & skill. What you draw matters, and one Deal Breaker can decide the game. Choosing what to bank, when to strike and when to keep a Just Say No back is where skill comes in.

Interaction. Nearly every action card targets another player, so rent demands, steals and swaps go round the table all game.

Set-up. Shuffle, deal five cards each and stack the rest face down as the draw pile. Keep Hasbro's English rules handy if anyone at the table doesn't read Tamil.

Reading. Money and property cards need almost no reading; each action card has a short instruction.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Monopoly Deal (Tamil edition) right for you?

Great if

  • Tamil-speaking families where Paati, Thatha or a younger child prefers to read in Tamil
  • Students in Tamil-medium schools who want to read the game for themselves
  • Pongal and summer holidays with cousins, or long train rides, since it is one small deck
  • Groups that mix Tamil and English readers: the money and property cards need no reading

Skip it if

  • Everyone at your table reads English easily: the English pack has Hasbro's online rules and many more videos
  • Your players read Tamil but not easily enough to follow short instructions on the action cards
  • Your family hates losing a finished set, because the Deal Breaker card takes a whole set at once

How Monopoly Deal (Tamil edition) plays

Deal five cards to each player and put the rest face down as the draw pile. Whoever first has three complete property sets on the table, each a different colour, wins. Nothing about the game changes in the Tamil pack; the deck and the rules are those of the English Monopoly Deal.

  • Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Hasbro India sells this pack as its Tamil edition, and the box front and back are printed in Tamil (வயது 8+, ஆட்டக்காரர், and the contents line '110 கார்டுகள், கேம் விதிகள்'). Money and property cards work by numbers and colours, so they need almost no reading. Only the action cards carry short instructions. For English cards, see our Monopoly Deal page.

The full explanation: how a game of Monopoly Deal (Tamil edition) goes

A turn has a simple shape: draw two cards (five if you have none left), then play up to three. Money, or an action card you'd rather keep as cash, goes into your bank face up. Property cards go into your collection on the table. Action cards can be played for their effect instead, such as charging rent on a colour you own, taking a single property, swapping one, or calling in a debt. You end your turn holding seven cards at most.

Payments come from your bank or from the properties you have laid down, never from your hand, and there is no change. Just Say No cancels an action aimed at you; Deal Breaker takes a complete set. Because of those two cards, a player who looks a turn away from winning can still be caught.

If a grandparent or a younger cousin is new to the game, play the first round with all hands face up and talk through each card. With mixed Tamil and English readers, the person who reads Tamil best can read out each action card as it is played. Most players know the cards by their pictures after a couple of games.

Where to buy

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

The Tamil pack is made in India: its box back says Made in India, names a printing company in Bengaluru as the manufacturer and Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai as the marketer, and gives Hasbro India's consumer helpline. There is no imported Tamil version. The Amazon buying link for this Tamil pack is paused while it is unavailable. For English cards, see our Monopoly Deal page.

Before you choose

  • Look for the Monopoly and Hasbro Gaming logos and Tamil text on the box: 'வயது 8+' and 'ஆட்டக்காரர்' on the front, and 'உள்ளடக்கம்: 110 கார்டுகள், கேம் விதிகள்' on the back.
  • The box back should say 'Made in India', show the code E3113TM04, and name Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. (Mumbai) as marketer with a 1800 consumer helpline. It also carries a BIS mark.
  • Count the cards: the real deck has 110, including 28 property cards, 11 wild property cards, 20 money cards and 34 action cards.
  • Choose a listing that names Hasbro Gaming or Monopoly as the brand. 'Deal' card games from unrelated brands, or titles with a misspelt Monopoly, are different products.

What reviewers and players say

We found no reviews of the Tamil pack itself; what follows is what reviewers say about Monopoly Deal, the same game. They like that it keeps Monopoly's sets, rent and dealing but is over in about 15 to 20 minutes, with no dice and no board, and that everyone is busy every turn. An Indian blogger calls it the only Monopoly edition he can enjoy, yet he, like many players, thinks the Deal Breaker card is too strong because it can grab a finished set and end the game. On a long-running discussion thread, players describe it as a quick, portable family game rather than a deep strategy game.

What people love

  • Games last about 15 to 20 minutes, with no dice and no long endgame
  • Constant interaction: rent, steals and Just Say No cards keep everyone in the game
  • Monopoly's familiar money and properties make it quick to pick up
  • A pocket-sized deck for trips, whose tactics shift with the number of players

Common complaints

  • Deal Breaker can win the game in one play, so players hold it, and their Just Say No cards, for the end
  • A lot depends on the draw, and some players find it light on strategy

Questions people ask about Monopoly Deal (Tamil edition)

Is Monopoly Deal available in Tamil?

Hasbro India has a Tamil edition of Monopoly Deal, with the same 110-card game as the English version. Its Amazon buying link is paused because we could not find an available offer for this edition at our latest check.

Is the Tamil Monopoly Deal made in India?

Yes. The back of the Tamil box says Made in India. It names Yuno Packaging Pvt Ltd in Bengaluru as the manufacturer and Hasbro India Toys Pvt. Ltd. in Mumbai as the marketer.

Are the rules of the Tamil Monopoly Deal different from the English game?

No. You still draw two cards, play up to three, pay debts from the table with no change, and win with three complete property sets in different colours. Hasbro's English rules and the English how-to videos work for the Tamil pack too.

Can someone who doesn't read Tamil play with this pack?

Yes, with a little help. Money and property cards are recognised by numbers and colours. The action cards carry short instructions, so a non-Tamil reader may need them explained in the first game or two, or can check Hasbro's English rules.

Is there a Tamil video that explains Monopoly Deal?

Yes. A Tamil YouTube channel has a long, detailed walkthrough of the card game, and we link it on this page alongside two shorter English videos.
