Great for Children from 6 who love anything 'eww', and birthday parties where a bit of shrieking is welcome

Think twice if Anyone in your group is put off by pretend snot and earwax: that is the whole theme

How we rate it

Learning curve. Spin, dig and find; the only thing to learn is whose turn it is to be Icky Picky. It sits with UNO and Connect 4 on our scale.

Luck & skill. The wheel decides which object you need, and finding it among the others is part luck, part nimble fingers. There's no strategy to plan.

Interaction. Everyone crowds round one head, and IMC's videos talk of hunting in your rivals' nose and ears, so it's a hands-on group game, but nobody attacks anyone.

Set-up. Hide the 15 objects in the nose and ears and put the wheel where everyone can reach it.

Reading. The rule sheet needs reading once; we couldn't confirm whether the wheel uses pictures or words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Icky Picky right for you?

Great if

  • Children from 6 who love anything 'eww', and birthday parties where a bit of shrieking is welcome
  • Mixed-age families: there are no words to learn and anyone can have a go at digging
  • Up to five players, so cousins can all play at once during the holidays
  • A short, loud game between longer ones

Skip it if

  • Anyone in your group is put off by pretend snot and earwax: that is the whole theme
  • You want strategy; finding the right object is mostly luck and nimble fingers
  • You want a game that adults will play on their own

How Icky Picky plays

Set-up: the head piece is a headband with a giant nose and two giant ears; IMC's own photos show it worn by one player while the others dig. Load the 15 gross objects into the nose and ears, and keep the spinning wheel handy.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Play is about finding objects, not reading. An adult reads the short rule sheet once; we couldn't confirm whether the spinning wheel uses pictures or words, so very young children may need help at first.

The full explanation: how a game of Icky Picky goes

A turn: one player takes the role of Icky Picky for the turn. The wheel is spun to show which object has to be found, and then the hunt begins: reach into the nose or the ears and try to pull out exactly that object, not one of the others.

How you win: the first player to find three of the objects shown by the wheel wins.

Tip: aim for the right object rather than the fastest grab, because IMC's own challenge is to find the most objects without making a mistake. Pass the Icky Picky role round the table so everyone gets a turn.

What reviewers and players say

Icky Picky has almost no reviews or player discussion that we could find, in English or any other language, so there is little to report beyond the makers' own words. IMC Toys pitches it as a challenge game that has you laughing as you hunt for the most disgusting objects in a giant nose and ears, and Funskool calls it stomach-churning but super fun. Whether that sounds like a treat or a horror depends entirely on your children, and probably on you.

What people love

  • The makers pitch it as a laugh-out-loud challenge: hunt for the grossest object without making a mistake
  • Rules short enough to explain in a minute: spin, find, and first to three wins
  • Room for up to five players at once

Common complaints

  • The snot-and-earwax theme won't suit everyone
  • Finding the right object is mostly luck, so older children may tire of it
