Great for Families with children aged about 6 and up

Think twice if You want a strategy game that keeps rewarding you over months of play

How we rate it

Learning curve. The rules take about two minutes: ask yes-or-no questions, guess the animal, win 7 cards. It sits at 1 on our scale with UNO. Asking smart questions is the skill, not learning rules.

Luck & skill. Which animal you draw is luck, and some are much easier than others. Asking questions that cut the options quickly, and knowing your animals, decide most games.

Interaction. Two sides take turns asking and answering. You rely on the other side to answer honestly, but there's no blocking or attacking.

Set-up. Shuffle the game cards and give each player or team three clue cards. There is nothing else to set up.

Reading. Guessers only need to talk, but the card-holder reads English clue words, clues and the bonus question off the card, so a child who can't read yet needs a partner.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

How Guess in 10 plays

The aim is simple: be the first player or team to win 7 game cards.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The cards (animal names, starting hints, fun facts) are in English. The questions themselves can be asked in any language, so Hindi, Tamil or a mix works fine at the table.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Hint

The other player or team draws a game card, keeps it hidden from you, and reads out the first two clue words printed under the animal.

  2. 2
    Ask

Ask up to 10 questions that can be answered yes or no, such as 'Does it live in water?'. You can make up to two guesses at any point, and you can spend one of your three clue cards to hear an extra clue.

  3. 3
    Win

Guess right and you keep the card. You can then risk it on the bonus question for a head start next turn. The first player or team to win 7 cards wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Guess in 10 goes

On a turn, someone draws a game card and keeps it hidden. They read out a couple of starting hints printed on the card. In Animal Planet, the card shows an animal along with a few facts about it.

You then ask up to 10 questions that can only be answered 'yes' or 'no'. For example: 'Does it live in water?', 'Is it found in India?', 'Is it bigger than a cow?' Part of the fun is learning which questions narrow things down fastest.

Each player gets a few clue cards for the whole game. Play one when you are stuck to get an extra hint from the card. Guess correctly and you keep the card. If the 10 questions run out, the card is set aside. Teams work well with bigger groups, and younger children enjoy being paired with an older cousin or a grandparent.

Small details, such as how many guesses you get and the bonus questions, vary a little between editions, so check the rule sheet in your box.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

Skillmatics is an Indian company, and it makes and sells Guess in 10 in India, including through its Amazon.in brand store. There is no reason to pay extra for an imported copy. Our Amazon.in link goes to Skillmatics' Animal Planet pack.

Before you choose

  • The box and listing should carry the Skillmatics name. The manufacturer is listed as Grasper Global Pvt Ltd (India).
  • Watch for look-alike names. One listing we saw was titled 'Guessing in 10 Countries of The World', copying Skillmatics' wording but without the Skillmatics name in the title.
  • Check the contents and barcode. A single Animal Planet pack has 50 game cards, 6 clue cards and an instruction manual. The original pack's barcode is 8904279500310; the newer Picture Clues tin's is 8904279507357.
  • Price alone won't catch a copy, because genuine packs are already inexpensive. Check the brand and seller instead.
  • Make sure the listing names Skillmatics as the brand; Skillmatics also sells through its own brand store on Amazon.in.

What reviewers and players say

Guess in 10 is Skillmatics' best-known game, and the Animal Planet pack won a 2022 National Parenting Product Award. The parents who tested it called it fun for both children and adults, good in a classroom, and easy to take on planes and to restaurants. The rules take two minutes, and children soon learn that a good question ('Does it live in water?') beats a wild guess. The catches are that whoever holds the card has to read English clues aloud, and one pack has only 50 animals, so families who play often may want a second edition.

What people love

  • Small enough to play anywhere; NAPPA's parent testers mention planes and restaurants
  • Fun for children and adults together, and useful in a classroom
  • Teaches children to ask questions that narrow things down, and they pick up animal facts along the way
  • Clue cards and bonus questions add a little tactics without making the rules harder

Common complaints

  • The card-holder has to read English clues and bonus questions, so non-readers need a partner
  • With 50 cards in a pack, families who play often will start to remember the answers
  • Rule details (guesses per card, bonus questions) vary a little between packs and online summaries
