Great for Big family gatherings: up to 8 players, and nobody waits for a turn

Think twice if Your family dislikes speed games where the quickest hand wins

How we rate it

Learning curve. Play a card that fits the one on top, as fast as you can. A seven-year-old gets it after one round, so it sits with UNO at 1 on our scale.

Luck & skill. Which cards you are dealt is luck, but quick thinking and fast hands decide most rounds.

Interaction. Everyone races for the same pile at the same time, and each card played changes what the others can put down.

Set-up. Shuffle, deal a hand to everyone and turn one card face up. That's it.

Reading. Picture cards need no reading, but each category card has a short English phrase to read at speed.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Crossover right for you?

Great if

  • Big family gatherings: up to 8 players, and nobody waits for a turn
  • Children from about 7 who like quick, shouty games
  • A ten-minute game between dinner and dessert
  • Travel: a small box of 200 cards

Skip it if

  • Your family dislikes speed games where the quickest hand wins
  • Your youngest players don't read English yet and you want them to play without help
  • You want a calm, turn-by-turn strategy game

How Crossover plays

Set-up: shuffle the 200 cards, which are 100 picture cards and 100 category cards, and deal everyone a hand. Skillmatics says you can start with any card, so turn one face up to begin the pile. The maker's page doesn't say how many cards each player gets, so check the manual in the box.

  • Time to teach: about 2 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Half the cards are pictures, but the category cards carry short English phrases such as 'Something red' or 'Starts with a vowel', which players must read and judge quickly. Children who don't read English yet will need a partner; the game is easy to explain in Hindi or any other language.

Deal the cards and turn any card face up to start the pile.

  2. 2
    Connect

No turns: everyone throws down a card that links to the top card, a picture that fits the category or a category that fits the picture.

  3. 3
    Win

The first player to empty their hand wins the round.

The full explanation: how a game of Crossover goes

Play: there are no turns. Everyone plays at the same time, throwing down a card that connects with the card on top of the pile. In the maker's example, a picture of strawberries is followed by 'Something red', then a picture of an alarm, then 'Something loud'.

How you win: the first player to empty their hand wins the round.

Tip: agree before you start how to settle a doubtful connection; a quick table vote works for most families. With younger children, let them play in a team with an older cousin who reads the category cards aloud.

What reviewers and players say

Crossover is very new: Skillmatics added it to its store in June 2026, and we found no independent written reviews or forum threads yet. One family YouTuber who was sent the game by Skillmatics calls it a great family game-night game and says the more people, the better. On paper it is a quick, loud, everyone-at-once card game, a bit like Dobble but built on linking ideas rather than spotting symbols. Expect a few friendly arguments about whether a link counts, and agree a quick way to settle them before you start.

What people love

  • Everyone plays at once, so nobody sits waiting for a turn
  • Takes up to 8 players, enough for a big family gathering
  • Rounds of about 10 minutes
  • A small box that travels easily

Common complaints

  • No independent reviews yet, so it is hard to say how well it holds up over many games
  • Whether a link counts can start arguments, and the maker's page doesn't say how to settle them
  • Category cards are in English, so children who don't read yet need help
