The quick verdict

Great for Big family get-togethers, where a whole room of cousins, uncles and aunts can shout answers at once

Think twice if You already own the standard Rapid Rumble: the rules are the same, and the Super Pack only adds cards

How we rate it

Learning curve. Roll, read a category, shout a word: anyone can learn it in a few minutes, so it sits with UNO at 1 on our scale. The hard part is finding English words fast, not the rules.

Luck & skill. The die picks the category and your letters arrive by chance, so a hand of awkward letters can slow you down. Quick thinking and a wide vocabulary still win most games.

Interaction. Everyone answers at the same moment and an answer can't be used twice, so you are always racing others to the obvious words.

Set-up. Sort the category cards into four colour decks, share out the letter cards and turn up three each. Dealing 200 letter cards to a big group takes a couple of minutes longer than the standard box.

Reading. Each category card has a short English prompt, and answers must start with given letters, so players read and spell simple English words.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Rapid Rumble Super Pack right for you?

Great if

  • Big family get-togethers, where a whole room of cousins, uncles and aunts can shout answers at once
  • Families buying Rapid Rumble for the first time who usually play in groups of five or more
  • Children who can read and spell simple English words, playing alongside quicker adults
  • A gift for a family that loves loud, everyone-at-once games

Skip it if

  • You already own the standard Rapid Rumble: the rules are the same, and the Super Pack only adds cards
  • You mostly play as two or three; the standard box has plenty of cards for a small group
  • Your group prefers calm, turn-by-turn games; everyone answers at once and it gets noisy

How Rapid Rumble Super Pack plays

Set-up: sort the 160 category cards into their four colour decks (Animals, Things, Culture, and Science and Nature). Shuffle the 200 letter cards and share them out so everyone has a face-down pile, then turn the top three of your pile face up. Those three letters are your hand.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The category cards are printed in English, and every answer has to begin with one of the letters in front of you, so players need to know and spell simple English words. Many families agree to accept Hindi or other Indian-language words written in English letters, such as 'aloo' for A, as a house rule.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Roll

Roll the wooden die to pick one of the four category decks, turn over its top card and flip the sand timer.

  2. 2
    Shout

Everyone at once calls out answers that fit the category and start with one of their face-up letters, then lays that letter down and turns up a new one.

  3. 3
    Win

When the sand runs out, the next player rolls. The first player to use up all their letter cards wins.

The full explanation: how a game of Rapid Rumble Super Pack goes

A round starts when one player rolls the wooden die. Four of its colours each point to a category deck, and the other faces let the roller pick the deck or pass that choice to someone else. Turn over the top card of the chosen deck, read it out (something like 'a country in Asia'), and flip the sand timer.

Now everybody plays at once. Shout an answer that fits the category and begins with one of your face-up letters, 'Nepal' for an N, say, then put that letter down and turn up the next card from your pile. An answer someone has already given in the round doesn't count. When the sand runs out, the next player rolls for a new category. A few letter cards are helpers: a Skip card brings a fresh category from the same deck, a Vowel card lets you answer with any word that starts with a vowel, and a Lucky Letter card stands for any letter. The first player to get rid of all their letter cards wins.

What the Super Pack changes is the number of cards, not the rules. With 200 letter cards instead of 100, a group of ten can each get about as many letters as five players get from the standard box, so a big group doesn't finish in a few minutes. The 160 category cards, against 120 in the standard box, also mean prompts come round again less often over a long school holiday.

Tip for mixed ages: a six-year-old can join in, but adults answer much faster. With a big group, play in pairs or small teams and put each young child with an older cousin or a grandparent, so everyone stays in the race.

Contents are from Skillmatics India's page for the Super Pack (SKU SKILL388RRS, barcode 8904279503533), and an Indian store listing gives the same list. Next to the standard Rapid Rumble box (120 category cards, 100 letter cards, timer, wooden die and manual), the Super Pack adds 40 category cards and 100 letter cards, 140 cards in all; the die, timer and rules are the same. Skillmatics doesn't say how many of the letter cards are helper cards.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyEditions and the details worth checking.

About the editions

The Super Pack is an Indian box: Skillmatics sells it on its own Indian store with India as the country of origin and its Mumbai company, Grasper Global, as maker, so there is no reason to look for an imported copy. Choose it over the standard box if you often play with five or more people or want more prompts; for a small family the standard box is enough. Our Amazon.in link goes to Skillmatics' own Super Pack, the box with 160 category cards and 200 letter cards.

Before you choose

  • The box should say Skillmatics and Rapid Rumble Superpack, and the label should name Grasper Global Private Limited, Mumbai, as maker
  • Count the contents: 160 category cards in four colours, 200 letter cards, a sand timer, a wooden die and an instruction leaflet
  • The Super Pack's barcode is 8904279503533; the standard box carries 8904279501683
  • A box with 120 category cards and 100 letter cards is the standard Rapid Rumble, not the Super Pack
  • The Super Pack box is noticeably bigger than the standard one, about 26 x 21 x 5 cm

What reviewers and players say

We found no reviews of the Super Pack itself, so this is what reviewers say about the standard Rapid Rumble, which plays the same way. A family review panel scored it 5 out of 6 each; one of them planned a low score until a four-player game won him over. A parent who bought her own copy says she and her teenager laughed all the way through and found the rules clear after one read. Both reviews say the box age of 6 is hopeful unless young children play in a team, and the panel found two-player games flat, which matters less with a box that has cards for up to ten.

What people love

  • Everyone answers at the same time, so nobody sits waiting for a turn
  • Rolling the die for the category, and letters that keep changing, make each round feel different
  • Rules that reviewers picked up after one read, and sturdy, colourful parts
  • Skip, Vowel and Lucky Letter cards rescue a player stuck with hard letters

Common complaints

  • Weak with two players; reviewers found it much better with four
  • The 6+ age is hopeful: young children need a team-mate or easier cards
  • Three hard letters at once can leave you stuck, and the rules leaflet is thin paper

Questions people ask about Rapid Rumble Super Pack

What is the difference between Rapid Rumble and Rapid Rumble Super Pack?

The rules are the same; the Super Pack just has more cards. It comes with 160 category cards and 200 letter cards, against 120 and 100 in the standard box, and it is sold for 2 to 10 players instead of 2 to 5. The box is bigger too.

Is the Rapid Rumble Super Pack an expansion for the standard game?

No. It is a complete game in its own box, with its own die, timer and rules, so you don't need the standard Rapid Rumble to play it. If you already own the standard box, you only need the Super Pack if you want more cards for bigger groups.

How many people can play Rapid Rumble Super Pack?

It is sold for 2 to 10 players aged 6 and up. Skillmatics also says Rapid Rumble can be played in teams, so a larger crowd at a family function can split into teams and share letter cards.

Is Rapid Rumble Super Pack made in India?

Skillmatics' own Indian store lists India as the country of origin for the Super Pack and names Grasper Global Private Limited, its Mumbai company, as maker. Skillmatics is an Indian games company.
