Great for Families with children of 7 to 12 who enjoy jigsaw puzzles and spotting small details

Think twice if You only have a small table: the finished puzzle is 12 cards wide and 6 cards tall

How we rate it

Learning curve. Placing cards is as simple as a jigsaw; the only thing to learn is counting connections, which takes a round or two. That keeps it at 1 on our scale, with UNO and Connect 4.

Luck & skill. The cards you are dealt and the ones you steal are luck, and you steal without looking, but quick eyes for where a card fits, and placing several cards together, earn far more steals.

Interaction. You steal from another player almost every turn, choose whom to target, and the Blocker card passes from player to player.

Set-up. Take out the Blocker, shuffle and deal the 72 cards evenly, place any leftovers roughly where they belong and draw five each.

Reading. The cards are pieces of a picture, with nothing to read. Only the rules leaflet, in English, needs reading once.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Puzl It: Aqua Adventure right for you?

Great if

  • Families with children of 7 to 12 who enjoy jigsaw puzzles and spotting small details
  • Mixed groups of up to six, since nobody needs to read during play
  • A short game after dinner that ends with everyone looking at the finished picture
  • Children who enjoy a little friendly stealing without complicated rules

Skip it if

  • You only have a small table: the finished puzzle is 12 cards wide and 6 cards tall
  • Someone in your group hates being knocked out early; once your cards run out, you watch the rest of the game
  • You want a game of planning; quick eyes for where a card fits matter more than strategy

How Puzl It: Aqua Adventure plays

Set-up: take the Blocker card out and put it where everyone can reach it (with only two players, leave it out of the game). Shuffle the 72 puzzle cards and deal them face down so everyone gets the same number, as their own draw pile. Any cards left over go face up in the middle, roughly where they belong in the picture. Everyone then draws five cards from their pile into their hand.

  • Time to teach: about 5 minutes.
  • Reading and language: The puzzle cards are pieces of one big picture, so there is nothing to read while you play; you match them using the reference picture on the back of the rules. Only the rules leaflet, in English, needs reading once, which makes it easy for grandparents and children who don't read English to join in.

The full explanation: how a game of Puzl It: Aqua Adventure goes

The youngest player starts and play goes to the left. On your turn you place a card where you think it belongs in the picture, using the reference image on the back of the rules; white edges mark the border of the puzzle. You can place a card on its own anywhere, next to cards already down, or place several at once if they all fit together.

Then count your connections: one for each card you placed, plus one for each edge that touches a card already in the puzzle. Corners don't count, and nor do the edges between cards you placed together. Steal that many cards from any one other player's pile (from their hand if their pile is empty), put them on top of your own pile without looking, and draw back up to five cards in your hand.

Some cards carry a Blocker symbol. Place one so that it touches another card and you take the Blocker card: nobody can steal from you until the start of your next turn, unless another player activates it and takes it from you. When only two players are left, the Blocker goes out of play.

When your pile and hand are both empty, you are out of the game. The last player with cards left wins and, as a bonus, uses those cards to finish the puzzle. Every Puzl It theme uses the same rules, so a family that knows one can play another straight away.

About the editions

Our Amazon.in link goes to Hasbro's Indian box of Puzl It: Aqua Adventure, item F8617, sold through Hasbro's own store on Amazon.in. Hasbro's India print of the F8617 rules gives Hasbro's India consumer helpline and says 'Made in India', and the listing names Hasbro India in Mumbai as the manufacturer. Boxes made for North America say Made in China, but the game inside is the same.

Before you choose

  • The box should carry the Puzl It and Hasbro Gaming logos and the words 'Aqua Adventure', with an underwater picture. Hasbro's item number is F8617.
  • Inside there should be 72 thick puzzle cards, 1 Blocker card and a rules sheet with the full reference picture on the back.
  • The Indian box's rules say Made in India and give Hasbro's India consumer helpline; North American boxes say Made in China and give Hasbro's US and Canada addresses. Both are Hasbro's game.
  • Check the theme: Pizza Party (F8286) has the same rules but a different picture, so make sure the box says Aqua Adventure if that's the one you want.

What reviewers and players say

Puzl It has had little review coverage so far, and we found no hands-on written review of Aqua Adventure. Geeky Hobbies has published a full rules guide that rates the game light in difficulty and strategy, with moderate luck, and about 20 minutes a game, and The Toy Insider picked Puzl It for its Top Games for Spring & Summer 2023 list. Video creators have filmed how-to-play guides, but there isn't enough written opinion yet to say how families find it over many games.

What people love

  • The Toy Insider picked Puzl It for its Top Games for Spring & Summer 2023 list
  • Geeky Hobbies rates it light in difficulty, so it is quick to teach to children of 7 and up
  • Each game ends with a finished picture, which the winner gets to complete

Common complaints

  • Geeky Hobbies rates strategy as light and luck as moderate, so it won't suit players looking for a deep game
  • Players who run out of cards are out of the game and have to wait for the others to finish

Questions people ask about Puzl It: Aqua Adventure

How do you play Puzl It?

Everyone gets an equal pile of the 72 puzzle cards and holds five. On your turn you place cards where they belong in the picture, count one connection per card placed plus one per edge touching a card already down, and steal that many cards from another player. Run out of cards and you are out; the last player with cards wins and finishes the puzzle.

Can two people play Puzl It?

Yes. Hasbro's rules work for 2 to 6 players; with two, you leave the Blocker card out and each player starts with 36 cards. It is livelier with three or four, when the Blocker and the choice of whom to steal from come into play.

Is Puzl It made in India?

The box sold in India is. Hasbro's India print of the Aqua Adventure rules says Made in India and gives Hasbro's India consumer helpline, and the Indian listing names Hasbro India in Mumbai as the manufacturer. Boxes made for North America say Made in China.

What is the difference between Puzl It Pizza Party and Aqua Adventure?

Only the picture. Pizza Party (F8286) builds a pizza-party scene and Aqua Adventure (F8617) an underwater scene. Both have 72 puzzle cards, a Blocker card and the same rules, for 2 to 6 players aged 7 and up.

How much space do you need to play Puzl It?

The finished puzzle is 12 cards across and 6 cards down, and everyone also needs room for their own pile and hand. Clear the dining table, or play on the floor, rather than squeezing onto a small coffee table.
