The quick verdict

Great for Bollywood fans who can name a film from one line of dialogue or a few words of a song

Think twice if Some of your group don't follow Hindi films or don't understand Hindi: they will be left out of most rounds

How we rate it

Learning curve. Read a clue, shout the answer, keep the card. Anyone can learn it in a couple of minutes, so it sits at 1 on our scale with UNO.

Luck & skill. Which card comes up is luck, and a card about your favourite film is a gift. But over a game, the player who knows more Bollywood and answers fastest wins.

Interaction. Everyone races to answer every card, so the whole table is involved all the time, and arguments over whose answer came first are part of the fun.

Set-up. Shuffle the cards and put the pile in the middle; nothing else to set up.

Reading. One player reads each short clue aloud. The clues are Hindi lines written in English letters, so the reader needs to be comfortable reading Hinglish.

Learning curve: 1 = UNO or Connect 4; 3 = Catan; 5 = a heavy strategy game. These describe the experience, not an overall score.

Is Bollywood Battle right for you?

Great if

  • Bollywood fans who can name a film from one line of dialogue or a few words of a song
  • Big groups: the box says 3 to 12 players, so cousins, friends and uncles can all join in
  • House parties and festival or wedding get-togethers where people drop in and out between rounds
  • A gift for the most filmy person in the family

Skip it if

  • Some of your group don't follow Hindi films or don't understand Hindi: they will be left out of most rounds
  • You want strategy or planning; this is quick recall and a fast mouth
  • Your children are under about 12: the maker says 14 and up, and the cards run from old classics to recent hits

How Bollywood Battle plays

Set-up: shuffle the 200 cards and put the pile face down where everyone can reach it. There is no board, no pieces and no score sheet; the cards you win are your score.

  • Time to teach: about 3 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Each card is a short clue that one player reads out: a famous film dialogue, a song lyric or a picture, and the answer is a Hindi film, song, actor or character. The maker's photos show the Hindi lines printed in English letters (for example 'Gulabi aankhen jo teri dekhi'), so anyone who reads English can read a card out, but to guess you need to understand Hindi and know Hindi films. The maker says Hindi cinema takes centre stage, with some regional hits that crossed over. We found no version in another language.

A turn, step by step

  1. 1
    Read

One player flips the top card and reads the clue aloud: a film dialogue, a song line or a picture clue.

  2. 2
    Guess

Players race to name the film, song, actor or character. The first right answer wins the card.

  3. 3
    Win

The maker's page says the first player to collect 7 cards wins; the box back says the most cards wins. Agree a rule first.

The full explanation: how a game of Bollywood Battle goes

A turn: one player flips the top card and reads the clue aloud. The maker's photos show three kinds of card: 'Guess the movie', 'Guess the song' with a lyric line such as 'Tu cheez badi hai mast mast', and 'Guess the character' with a famous dialogue. The maker also mentions picture clues and actors. The first player to call out the right answer wins the card.

Winning: the maker's product page says the first player to collect 7 cards becomes the Ultimate Bollywood Fan and wins. The box back instead says the player with the most cards wins, which makes a longer game if you play through more of the pile. Agree which rule you are using before you start.

Tips: with a mixed-age group, play in pairs or teams, so a film-buff grandparent can sit with a teenager who knows the new songs. If someone doesn't follow Hindi films, let them be the reader for a few rounds; they still get to enjoy the race. A fun house rule to try: sing or act out the song cards instead of reading them, dumb-charades style.

About the editions

Bollywood Battle is an Indian game: Gouda Games' product page gives India as the country of origin and names Grasper Global Pvt Limited, Mumbai, as the manufacturer. There is no imported version to look for. Our Check price on Amazon.in button goes to the original 200-card Bollywood Battle, not 2.0.

Before you choose

  • The listing should name Gouda Games as the brand, and the box front says Bollywood Battle and 'The Ultimate Bollywood Guessing Game'
  • The maker's box photo says 200 game cards; inside are the cards and an instruction manual
  • The maker's photos mark it for 3-12 players and 14-99 years
  • If the box says 2.0 and 'with all new challenges', it is Bollywood Battle 2.0 (140 cards), a different set
  • The maker gives the box size as about 19.3 x 14.4 x 4.9 cm

What reviewers and players say

We found no independent reviews, videos or forum threads about Bollywood Battle, so there is little to go on beyond Gouda Games' own description and photos. On paper it is a simple, loud Bollywood quiz: a card is read out and the quickest correct answer wins it, with clues from film dialogues, song lyrics and pictures across old and new films. It should work best with a big group of Hindi-film fans and will fall flat for anyone who doesn't follow Bollywood. The rules are very short, and the maker's page and the box back give different endings, so agree on one before you play.

What people love

  • Takes a minute to explain and plays with up to 12 people, so it suits big family gatherings
  • Clues come from dialogues, songs and pictures across the decades, so different generations each get their moments
  • Small box with only cards, easy to carry to a party or a trip home
  • An Indian-made party game built entirely around Hindi cinema

Common complaints

  • Of no use to players who don't know Hindi films or don't understand Hindi
  • No independent reviews yet, so it's hard to say how soon a group gets through the 200 cards and starts repeating answers
  • The ending is unclear: first to 7 cards on the maker's page, most cards on the box back
